Our William Randell Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are named and created in honour of our family ancestor and esteemed pioneer of Australia, William Richard Randell (1824 - 1911). He emigrated to South Australia in 1837 aged 13 years with his family, only ten months after the Colony of South Australia had been founded. Randell developed a knowledge of steam engines from his father’s flour mill at Gumeracha, along with a fascination for the river. In 1851 the Governor of South Australia created a bonus of £4000 to the first two boats to successfully navigate the Murray River.

Expert Reviews

Phillip White "Classic old-style silk-and-velvet Barossa Shiraz of such high order has been a bit of a rarity on this desk: it’s great to be reminded of just how solidly accomplished and matter-of-factly seductive they can be when fed a proper range of fruits from such a range of sites. Single-site wine growing is one thing, and it’s become very popular indeed. But the capacity to blend across various sites almost always offers a more consistent, reliable and impressive drink.

All the regular business went into this wine: small open fermenters, pump-overs by hand, best parcels into American oak barrels (40 per cent new) and then only the most exemplary barrels were chosen for the assemblage.

So? All those lovely silky prunes and plums, the mulberries and blackberries, the gentle fleshy mushroom you’d expect of the best of the big valley are in this wondrous thing. With that edge of Quercus alba sap that I called right wing when it stuck its head out of a Penfolds extravagance with an extra zero on it a few weeks back.

In fact, if you smarted at those new Penfolds prices, this is a brand you could quite honourably retreat to and emerge with dignity and the satisfaction of saving a great deal of money.

This would make hearty celebratory drinking with beef or cheddar at Christmas, or be a very safe bet left mellowing for a decade in the dungeon."

93- 95 Points – Robert Parker Wine Advocate September 2018 "Stereotypical Oz Shiraz to some extent, the 2016 William Randell Shiraz is big, ripe and heavily accented by American oak. Cedar and vanilla notes blend with rich, plummy fruit, those sweet notes brought together and balanced by savoury dry tannins. It's a big-ass steak wine, one that will be appreciated by consumers at steakhouses around the world."

95 Points – Bob Campbell MW"Dense, inky red colour, with a Christmas cake medley of dried fruit and nut flavours together with liquorice, chocolate/mocha and vanilla characters. A power-packed wine with impressive ageing potential"

19.5/20 – Raymond Chan"Very dark, near saturated lack-hue ruby-red colour. The nose is full and sweetly ripe with vibrant and luscious aromas of blackberries melded with boysenberries and black plums along with a layer of black pepper and Asian spices, and sweet, nutty oak. This has excellent intensity and unfolds layers of richness with exotic detail. Full-bodied, the palate has beautifully ripened and sweetly luscious flavours of blackberries with notes of boysenberries and black plums, with complexing black pepper, spices and exotic oak. The flavours are succulent, decadent and opulent, and are supported by considerable fine-grained tannin structure and grip to match the power of the fruit. The acidity is ripe and restrained, lending a thread of vitality that sees the wine carry to a sustained, rich and sweet finish. This is a beautifully rich, decadent and opulent Shiraz with ripe black fruits, spices and exotic oak on a palate with great structure and power."

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep red with inky purple hues. This classic Barossa style shows rich blackberry, liquorice, spice plum and smoky oak on the nose. The palate is dense with ripe mulberry and berry compote and generous supporting oak. The tannins are savoury and long with spicy refined finish.

After 20 years in vineyard development, Thorn-Clarke is without doubt one of the most exciting Barossa Valley brands to enter the market in some time. The name Thorn-Clarke derives literally from the relationship between two long time Barossa Families. Founders David and Cheryl Clarke (Nee Thorn) work with their son and daughter, Sam and Nicole, in this family-orientated business. With four family-owned vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valley, Thorn-Clarke produces wines across three ranges (Sandpiper, Shotfire and William Randell). All represent exceptional value and display true regional character. This label showcases the best that the Barossa has to offer.
