Overview

All fruit was handpicked and fermented in small open vats. Around 17% of the fruit was left as whole clusters, the rest destemmed. Fermentation occurred naturally after which the wine was drained to oak barrels to age for 11 months. Barrels and blocks were then selected for the final blend and rested in tank for several months prior to bottling.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma: Vibrant red fruits, cocoa powder and dried spice.

Palate: Supple, long, and fruit focused with a finely grained tannin structure. Red berry flavours with a hint of toasty oak.

A vintage with a supple but firm structure and the concentration necessary for cellaring well. This Pinot Noir should improve with time in bottle and be near its peak between 3-7 years after harvest.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
