History of Paul Louis

Paul Louis Saguez de Breuvery was born in the 19th century. He was the Mayor of Châlon-en-Champagne and a descendant of the Saguez de Breuvery family; a  famous noble family who lived in Champagne since 1431. Henri Marie Joseph Louis Abelé, a Champagne producer and resident of Châlon-en-Champagne, decided to create a new trendy brand Paul Louis in tribute to the Mayor of the town. He created Paul Louis.

In 1986 the CFGV, Compagnie Française des Grands Vins, bought the brand Paul Louis and decided to create a new type of Sparkling with a new recipe that we call today the “Méthode Traditionnelle”.

Paul Louis is now located in the cellar of Maison Veuve Amiot in Saumur, in the heart of the Loire Valley. Maison Veuve Amiot was founded in 1884 by Louis Abele’s widow Elisa Amiot; the “Grande Dame of the Loire Valley”.

Her mission was to develop prestigious wines from the Loire Valley region and to make it known all around the world. Maison Veuve Amiot is the perfect alliance of tradition and modernity. A combination of charm, elegance and authenticity, a symbol of the art to live and spirited reflection of French wine.

Our cellars & the wine making process

Paul Louis is matured for a long time the Veuve Amiot cellar. This cellar is cut out of the local Loire Valley soft limestone ‘tuffeau’. Paul Louis begins from the growing and picking of grapes in the Val de Loire vineyard. This sparkling wine is the finished product of a long and complex process that has required several months of constant care.

The process is the named The Traditional Method. The method is; blending, bottling, bottle fermentation, riddling, disgorging, dosage and labelling. It is the purest and most celebrated process for French wine making.

Our cellar is one of the last Loire Valley Maisons still producing in its original building. Each year, thousands of visitors tour the 5km cellar galleries to learn more about the Val de Loire French terroir.

Paul Louis Blanc de Blancs is made from 100% Chardonnay.

This is a premium sparkling wine characterised by its fine beading and detailed palate flavours.  Paul Louis Blanc de Blancs is a classic dry style sparkling made to enjoy in its youth to capture the brightness and freshness of a wine that is ideal as an aperitif, or a wine to celebrate with.
