Overview

Over 126 years ago Alexander Campbell Johnston planted his first small vine cutting in McLaren Vale, the Johnston family still produce estate grown wine and operate one of Australia’s oldest wineries - PIRRAMIMMA.

The old low trellis contoured Ironstone vineyard yields under 2 tonnes of fruit per acre. The concentrated fruit offered from these vines in 2015 provided us the quality and power to release our third Ironstone Shiraz.

After fermentation 40% of the wine was matured in new and second fill American oak for 28 months, with 60% matured in older barriques.

Winery Tasting Notes

The bouquet displays spicy red plum, mulberry, bramble and subtle cedary oak, with hints of coconut and vanilla. The palate shows distinctive regional flavours of dark chocolate, Satsuma plum, wild loganberries, blackberry and toasted Mocha oak, complemented by spice and black pepper notes.

This rich powerful Shiraz is wonderfully balanced with fruit, firm structured tannin and oak in harmony.

Approachable now or will develop for over 10 years with careful cellaring.

5-Star Winery - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.

"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
