Lowburn Ferry is a small, family-owned winery with our vineyards in a sheltered north facing terrace in the Lowburn Valley beneath the Pisa Range in Central Otago. These vineyards started out as glacial terraces and prior to 2000 were in pasture. They now provide healthy soils and are part of a unique terroir ideal for the production of some of New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noir. Lowburn Ferry is named after the area surrounding an historic ferry crossing over the Clutha River. Owners Roger and Jean Gibson have an academic background in soil science and horticulture, and are totally focussed on producing the best pinot noir wine from their special site in the Lowburn Valley – ‘great wines are made in the vineyard.’

Winery Tasting Notes

The Ferryman is a passionate expression of the special terroir of Lowburn Ferry Vineyard in Central Otago, where the underlying deep silt soils have long been nurtured and are rich in soil life and organic matter. Selected vines were specially managed during the growing season to produce this deep dark purple pinot noir. Aromas of dark cherry and plum fruit on the nose are complimented by savoury notes of leather and spice, together with some smoky char. Lush, sweet dark fruit on the palate blend with spice and hints of cigar box. A medium bodied, complex wine which has dense fine grained tannin and a long mineral finish.

Judges comments:

“A medium brick red colour. A really attractive nose redolent of spice with red fruits and some earthy notes. The palate is rich and complex without being overblown. It sits very well with the food as the richness of the wine looked very well balanced.”

Ken Dobler

“A vibrant crimson hue. An intense bouquet of fresh warm strawberries. Silky and high toned with ample strawberry fruit and fine tannins. Even more delicious with the food. The bright strawberry fruit is even more delineated.”

Andrew Pritzker

“A very good lifted Pinot aromatic. Lovely fragrant cherry aromas. Elegant. Lightly herbal but with good mouth feel and tannins. A lovely elegant yet concentrated wine and it worked very well with this dish.”

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Deep in the south of New Zealand and surrounded by mountain ranges is Central Otago New Zealand's smallest but fastest growing wine region and home to some of the finest vineyards in the country. Central Otago has a continental climate hot summers and long cold winters and in small pockets of the region the combination of microclimate and unique soil conditions are perfect for growing the fickle Pinot Noir grape. The Pinot Noirs from Central Otago have been rapidly gaining international acclaim.

Lowburn Ferry is the area surrounding an historic ferry crossing over the mighty Clutha River. A picturesque lake now occupies the ferry site at the base of the Lowburn Valley and vineyards abound on the surrounding glacial terraces where goldminers once toiled in the hot Otago sun.

Nestled on a sheltered north facing terrace in the Lowburn Valley beneath the Pisa Range is Lowburn Ferry Vineyard, a family owned vineyard dedicated to the production of high quality Pinot Noir wine. The vines are hand tended to maximise the benefits of the unique terroir and microclimate.
