Expert Reviews

95 Points, Special Value -James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2018 Like all Kilikanoon's Rieslings, no frills to the vinification, just attention to detail. Incongruously, it is a blend of three vineyards. The bouquet owes as much to minerally notes as to citrus fruit, and the palate duly brings structure and length for the lemon/lime flavours and firm finish.

Rating 93 - Wine & Spirits Magazine USA, October Edition

A year from now, this wine will likely overtake the 2015, once it sheds its youthful fermentation aromas and builds on the powerful lime explosion that stands in for its fruit. Put on your pith helmet if you open this now; shake it for a few minutes in a decanter and you might get to the clean, fresh, bright and juicy side of the wine. Cellar it for another seven to eight years and the citrus fruit will begin to mass around the mineral acidity, becoming a compellingly rich, complex white.

92 Points - Jeremy Oliver

Young and lean, this searingly intense and taut riesling reveals a penetrative fragrance of lime juice, mineral and lemon zest. Its long and chalky, and just needs time to flesh out.

91+ Point Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Opening with youthfully subdued peach, lime cordial and jasmine notes with nuances of allspice and baking bread, the 2016 Morts Block Watervale Riesling fills the palate with plenty of crisp, intense lemon/lime and savory flavors, finishing refreshingly dry and minerally.

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale straw in appearance with brilliant clarity and youthful green tints.

Lifted floral notes and intense citrus flavours are a highlight of the nose, well supported by lemon curd and fresh limes.

The cooler nature of the vintage has resulted in an intensely flavoured and tightly wound Riesling style, with bracing natural acidity beautifully harmonising the juicier lime and citrus flavours of the variety. Its long and persistent finish the perfect indication that this vintage will be one to reward with further cellaring time to increase its complexity and appeal.

Cellaring: Potential of at least at least 20 years

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.
