NICK BUTLER

96 Points

Vibrant purple colour with crimson-red edges. Cloves and red licorice hover above a bright mix of black and red berries. It's incredibly intense when sipped. Concentrated, raspberry liqueur and black cherries, the tannins are supple, oak beautifully measured. A sensational young wine - fruit as pristine as you could wish for.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON

93 Points

It builds in the glass quite beautifully. It seems juicy and free-flowing at first but gradually the strings pull tighter. Garden herbs, boysenberries, cloves and red cherries, the balance between its various aspects pitched just so well. It tastes as though it’s hardly trying but that’s what it wants you to think. It’s a savoury shiraz done very well; it’s going to improve over time rather than merely holding; it’s buoyant and succulent and things like that. 93+ points.

Winery Tasting Notes

Season

A fantastic Spring with a highly successful flowering allowing us to shoot thin and cluster select down to just 1 bunch per shoot. We had a good supply of deep soil moisture from a wet winter, some January rain, followed by a long dry finish to the ripening period. The growing season was warmer and the ripening earlier than 2017, but 2018 was defined by a massive amount of vine and canopy energy. Just perfect growing weather really. We picked fruit with dark colours, lovely skin and seed tannin and good natural acid levels.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Yarra Valley based vignerons, the Sexton family live in the middle of their 80 acre vineyard established on the high north face of the Warramate Ranges in the dress circle of the Yarra Valley, one hour east of Melbourne.

At Giant Steps, they explore site, micro climatic and clonal differences between several specialised vineyards in the Yarra Valley including their own multiclonal vineyard and the highly regarded Tarraford vineyard.

Focused intently upon reflecting the individual and unique characteristics of each single vineyard, Giant Steps adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking including, whenever possible, vinification using indigenous yeasts and gravity flow transfers.

When in the Yarra Valley you must stop by the winery/cellar door situated in the main street of Healesville, which offers wood fired pizzas, in-house roasted coffee, cheese, beer on tap, and of course wine.
