Overview

Crabtree Watervale Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard block, with vines warmed by the northerly aspect of the estate. Planted in rich red loam and clay these 40+ year old vines produce luscious thick skin berries that are hand-picked just at the moment of full ripening for intensity of flavour producing a classic Clare Valley shiraz and a satisfying palate overflowing with dark fruit, tannins and oak finely balanced.

Expert Reviews

Rating 92 James Halliday Published 01 August 2018

Hand-picked, open-fermented, basket-pressed, matured in French oak for 16 months. Vivid, deep purple-crimson; spiced plum fruit with oriental overtones on the bouquet, and the elegant medium-bodied palate has very good mouthfeel, with no hint of over-extraction or overripe grapes.

Winery Tasting Notes

With lifted berry fruit flavours of mulberry and plum skin, Watervale shiraz shows lifted spicy aromatics with a bold and concentrated structure. The handpicked fruit was open fermented and basket pressed using traditional methods and matured in a blend of one year old and two year old French oak barriques for 12-14 months.

Cellar or Savour – to drink now best served decanted. With careful cellaring this wine should mature gracefully for 8+ years.

Winery Profile

5 Star rated from James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2013

Wine industry executives Richard Woods and Rasa Fabian purchased Crabtree in 2007 and left Sydney corporate life for the ultimate seachange. Collectively, they had decades of sales and marketing experience, and remain adamant that Crabtree should be an estate brand, and therefore limited in volume. Kerri Thompson (from Wines by KT) is a highly talented and very experienced winemaker, having a great record with Riesling.
