Overview

After harvesting in the very cool early morning, the grapes were destemmed without crushing, direct into the press. Gentle pressing allowed extraction of the prime juice, whilst still maintaining the delicacy and elegance. Fermentation proceeded in stainless steel tank with about half of the solids retained until about the mid-point of sugar conversion, when the juice was then filled to French oak Hogsheads to complete fermentation. Lees stirring was performed weekly for 3 months, and 30% of the wine underwent Malo-Lactic fermentation. The wine was matured in the same oak barrels for 8 months before filtration and bottling

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Cape Barren, named after the rare Cape Barren Geese that are regular visitors to the vineyard, is the passion of owners Brian Ledgard & Peter Matthews.

The unique McLaren Vale maritime climate offers long warm summers cooled by afternoon ocean breezes, thus providing the ideal ripening conditions for grapes destined for full-bodied red wine.

All fruit for Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz is sourced from a single seventy year old vineyard at Blewitt Springs that has previously been used to produce some of South Australia's icon wines.
