2018 will rate as one of the best seasons for grape growers in the Mt Barker and indeed, the Great Southern. It was an extremely ‘kind’ season with no weather extremes, no disease risk and consistently fine weather; all the fruit achieved optimal ripeness and flavour development without losing its natural acidity. As a result, we have whites that are fully ripe but with slightly higher acidities. All this Sauvignon Blanc is from our Langton vineyard, right beside the winery (= zero fruit miles!).

Winery Tasting Notes

COLOUR: Super bright and clear with the tiniest hint of green/gold.

AROMA: Lovely fresh, ripe, Sauvignon characters of passionfruit and green melon, with just a hint of herbaceousness.

PALATE: The palate is deliciously fresh and zesty with loads of citrusy flavours and a zingy acidity. Gorgeous fruit flavours of gooseberries and ‘greengage’ plums. Our 2018 SB is well flavoured but fresh and tight as the acidity gives the wine its good structure and length.

Superb drinking now, especially as an aperitif and will continue to drink well over the next 12+ months.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.
