A selective hand pick was made from our oldest vines, focussing on raisined berries and noble rot bunches. Soaked overnight on skins before fermentation in small oak vessels, before bottling 3 months after harvest.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma: Exuberant spices, lychee, crystallised ginger and ripe stonefruits

Palate: Seductively rich and packed with peach, honey and exotic fruit flavours. Power balanced with refreshing fruit is a hallmark of this site.

Cellaring: With an abundance of primary fruit at bottling and a firm fine structure, expect this wine to fill out and become more generous over the next 3 years. Following this more complex aromas will emerge and the wine should evolve and remain an engaging drop until at least 2025.

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
