Winery Tasting Notes

“Neudorf are one of my favourite New Zealand producers, and though the wines are generally tasted blind, it is hard to separate the wonderful Finn family, and their vision writ large in their wines, from the consumption and assessment of their wines. Late 70s pioneers of Nelson, they continue to excel.

Fleshy, spicy, slightly reductive style with dark cherry fruits galore and a sniff and sprinkle of pepper. Dark cherries in the palate too, more of the smoky-earthiness going on, chewy, puckering finish a treat, showcasing ripe yet relatively elegant fruit profile. Flesh, bounce, fun, serious, good wine." Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.

Another step in the evolution of Neudorf Pinot Noir.

Working with newer clones has changed the shape of material at hand for winemaker Todd Stevens. As these additions to the Pinot vineyards settle down, we see a more fragrant, more supple wine in our glass.

The nose has hints of wild fruits and brambles. It is supported by elegantly restrained tannins, gently adding depth to the palate but never intruding. We feel this more feminine version is charming but not weak kneed.

As always Todd maintains that less and more and the wine has the “Neudorfness” we cherish.

Our Moutere Clays provide an European edge – the fruit is kept in check with an uplifting minerality and vibrancy. A wine which never tires or bores but rather offers a full juicy mouthful with a lingering complex finish. Just as the wine flows to the end of your palate there is a surge of flavour maintaining a satisfying mouthfeel.

Definitely drinkable but still precisely Pinot.

Proudly unfined and unfiltered.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Neudorf Vineyards is regarded as one of New Zealand's finest boutique wineries. Exporting to 16 countries, their wine is listed at some the world's greatest restaurants.

Neudorf's home plantings spill down a gentle north-facing slope overlooking a side branch of the Moutere Valley at the top of New Zealand's South Island. They also grow grapes on the stony alluvial area between the Waimea and Wai-iti rivers at Brightwater, on the Waimea plains south of Nelson.

Vineyard management is driven by the winemaker's desire for ripe flavours and concentrated fruit. A combination of high plant density (up to 5000 vines/hectare) and low production (down to one kilo per vine for Pinot Noir) helps achieve the quality of fruit to create long-lived, intense but elegant wines. New clonal material is consistently being evaluated.
