Our Block's Road cuvee is a careful blend of two 43 year old vineyards located in the Leasingham sub region of the Clare Valley.

With the cool nights, warm days and mostly dry conditions perfect in slowing down the ripening process, elevating the distinctive regional fruit characters, varietal complexity and elegant tannin structures.

Traditional vinification methods, including basket pressing, open fermentation and ageing in a combination of new and seasoned French oak casks, furthering the wines interest and cellaring potential.

Expert Reviews

Rating 95 - James Halliday Wine Companion, AU Special Value 2019 Edition

Hand-picked, basket-pressed, matured for 18 months in French hogsheads. It's unusually richly endowed with juicy blackcurrant fruit from the often reticent Clare Valley in giving cabernet permission to speak. Moreover it doesn't front-end load the wine with tannins.

91+ Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2017

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Blocks Road is scented of black currant pastilles, blackberry pie and menthol with hints of bay leaves and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate delivers a great intensity of black fruit and cedary flavors supported by firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with hints of dried herbs.

Winery Tasting Notes

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

Classy notes of red fruits, cigar box, tight cedary oak and hints of garden mint seductively combine on the nose.

Beautifully crafted palate, featuring the flavours of blackcurrents, red fruits and chocolates, well supported by subtle oak chariness and fine grained tannins in a lingering and satisfying finish.

Cellaring: Potential of at least 12 - 15 years

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.
