Ashbrook Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

With almost ideal weather conditions for whites exceptional fruit has been produced showing intense varietal flavours that are typical Margaret River. Aromatic varieties were outstanding with fresh citrus, lemon blossom and stone fruit on the nose and palate balanced off by crisp acidity. The temperature cooled off toward the end of February providing ideal weather conditions for the red varietals to fully ripen their flavour profiles and tannins. Once again there was a huge amount of Marri blossom leading into vintage therefore Silvereye bird damage was minimal. Flavour intensity was further benefited by the fact that cropping levels were reduced by around 30% across the region due to storms in early spring.

Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot 2017 (6 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

VINTAGE: What a long, and strange vintage 2017 was. Every vintage is different; lessons learned from the previous year don’t always help the following year.2017 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. During the middle and latter part of March the South-West region including Margaret River experienced a very unusual amount of rain and very cool weather, ripening over this period was very slow. The first suggestions of worry started to appear in growers eyes. Of recent history Margaret River has experienced very dry conditions in March and early April with the season breaking mid to late April, not a problem with all the grapes picked. But this year the concern was that if the season broke in mid April all the red grapes would be still on the vine. However anyone that lived though the late April and early May in the South-West of Western Australia will testify that never had we had a better, warmer early autumn. It was simply perfect; cool crisp mornings and evenings but beautiful warm and sunny days; not too hot, textbook conditions for great ripening especially for the red varietiesThe Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2013 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River

Lot No: 0026-2478925

Vintage

Following the driest July ever recorded in the South West, early spring conditions saw excellent budbreak and steady vine growth, as frequent rainfall events ensured good soil moisture prior to flowering. Late November brought thunderstorms and extreme winds to the region which resulted in reduced yields across most varieties - particularly Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon which were reduced by around 30%. The summer was very warm and dry with some bursts of heat during late December which advanced the development of the fruit. With warm and dry conditions continuing into February, many blocks reached optimal flavour at the same time, resulting in a very compressed harvest period for the whites. Our first harvest of Chardonnay was on the 6th of February which is nearly 10 days earlier than our long term average. Our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot fruit was harvested during late March and early April which is quite typical for these varieties. All of the fruit was harvested in pristine condition with great vibrancy and excellent flavour profiles ensuring 2013 will produce another excellent crop of wines. Vineyard Voyager Estate Girt by Sea is produced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes sourced from our North Block and Weightmans vineyards. The gentle rolling gravelly hills provide the perfect soils for growing vines with excellent natural balance and moderate yields. All of our vineyards are managed following a sustainable and natural approach to viticulture, with a focus on building a healthy and resilient vineyard through the use of natural products and the encouragement of bio diversity. There is also a component of Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot utilised in this blend from two premium selected vineyards. The Estate vineyards are planted to four different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon which contribute slightly different fruit profiles to the final wine. The vines are all meticulously trained to a vertical shoot positioned canopy and are hand pruned, shoot thinned and green thinned prior to harvest. (264940-3)

Tyrrell's Beyond Broke Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6 x 750mL) WA

The grapes were sourced from Margaret River in Western Australia, Australia’s pre-eminent Cabernet Sauvignon region. This varietal has a real affinity for the soils and weather conditions in Margaret River. The fruit was picked in the cool of the night and processed without crushing the berries, this reduces the extraction of overt tannin in favour of more fruit freshness and vibrancy. Maturation took place in older French oak (10 months), ideal when trying to highlight the fruits vibrancy and structure.Beyond Broke Road Cabernet Sauvignon is medium to full bodied. It has classic lifted dark cherry and blackberry aromas with hints of violets and olive tapenade. The plate is vibrant and fresh showing off the dark fruits and herbaceous varietal notes with silky tannins a bright natural balance.

The Hay Shed Hill vineyard is located in the Willyabrup Valley, the premier sub-region of the Margaret River Wine region. Only 5 Km from the Indian Ocean with an elevated aspect, the vineyard thus enjoys the benefit of the 'doctor' the well-known sea breeze that comes off the ocean each afternoon and cools down the vineyard giving the fruit a much cooler climate character than the latitude of the vineyard might suggest. The vineyard is hilly with several aspects ranging from steep south facing slopes on which the best Chardonnay is located, to equally steep north facing slopes where the best Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys the full face of the sun. The majority of the vineyard is dry grown producing small yields of outstanding fruit.

Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (12 x 750mL), Margaret River, WA.

The signature Cabernet Sauvignon of Vasse Felix. Crafted from Vasse Felix’s premier sections of Wilyabrup Cabernet, with the finest gravel loam soils, best clone, aspect and access to the cooling ocean breeze. It was the first red wine produced in Margaret River and has been made every year since 1972. This wine’s distinctive style possesses all the hallmarks of the finest Wilyabrup Cabernet.VINTAGE DESCRIPTION2017 was a cooler and later vintage than the previous 10 years; a year of elegant, perhaps slightly lighter bodied wines, though ripe in flavour, vibrant and very perfumed. Higher than average yields in combination with a cooler season contributed to delayed ripening of the fruit and good acid retention. Some timely warmth and sunshine occurred throughout January, although February temperatures remained moderate with some rainfall. With the cooler weather, canopy management and fruit thinning was imperative to mitigate disease pressures and allow for even, persistent ripening. There was a warm start to March to finish the white harvest, followed by the driest April since 1982, finishing the reds beautifully.

Cabernet Sauvignon is king of the Margaret River region. It wears many guises from the tip of Cape Naturaliste in the northern sub-region of Yallingup, to Augusta at the southern tip of the Karridale region. The warmer areas produce richer more generous wines with black fruits and bigger tannin structures; the cooler areas are finer, more delicate with lifted red fruit, floral aromatics and medium bodied structures. Of course this generalized characterization of MR Cabernet Sauvignon can be radically skewed by warmer or cooler growing seasons…ahhh, the joys of viticulture.
