Henschke `Hill of Grace` 1978 (1x 750mL), Edeny Valley, Cork

Henschke `Hill of Grace` 1978 (1x 750mL), Edeny Valley, Cork

Lot No: 0002-2472210

Over 165 years ago Johann Christian Henschke came from Silesia to settle and farm in the Eden Valley region. By the time third-generation Paul Alfred Henschke took over the reins in 1914, the famous Hill of Grace vines were more than 50 years old. They were planted around the 1860s by an ancestor, Nicolaus Stanitzki, in rich alluvial soil in a shallow fertile valley just north-west of the winery. The red-brown earth grading to deep silty loam has excellent moisture-holding capacity for these dry-grown vines, which sit at an altitude of 400m, with an average rainfall of 520mm. Hill of Grace is a unique, delineated, single historic vineyard that lies opposite a beautiful old Lutheran church which is named after a picturesque region in Silesia called Gnadenberg, meaning Hill of Grace. Cyril Henschke made the first single-vineyard shiraz wine from this vineyard in 1958 from handpicked grapes vinified in traditional open-top fermenters. (261639-16)

The quality of Château Lafite Rothschild needs no introduction. As early as 1815, Abraham Lawton had already designated it as leader: “I ranked it as being the most elegant and delicate, with the finest body of the three (leading wines)” he qualified in 1855. As to Château Lafite's attributes found in all vintages, it was an enlightened amateur that summed it up best by saying “...whatever the case, all the Château Lafite wines have an almond and violet aroma!” (261639-3)

Mount Mary `Quintet` 1993 (3 x 750mL), Yarra Valley, VIC.

Lot No: 0066-2472210

The vineyard is planted to Cabernet sauvignon (46%), Merlot (26%), Cabernet franc (18%), Malbec (5%) and Petit verdot (5%). The percentage of each variety that goes into the final blend changes with the season as factors such as fruitfulness and fruit set. The greatest influence we have over the quality of this wine is deciding when to pick each variety, this determines not only the flavours but the quality of tannins, and the acid and alcohol levels. The fermentation regime is similar to that of the Pinot, although slightly longer fermentations are employed (up to 10 days). This is followed by 22 months on barrel maturation, with 25% of the blend in large format oak (1500L or larger), and 30% in new barriques (225L). (261593-55)

1er Cru Classe

Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion wine is definitely bewitching. It possesses a great intensity that will delight you with its complexity (a mixture of red fruits) and the signatures of its terroir in its empyreumatic notes (Havana cigars, chocolate, roasting, cedarwood and so on). On the palate, the wine is spherical and generous without a trace of agressiveness. It lengthens on silky tannins, making this wine so obvious that the taste succumbs to its charm. (261639-5)

Chateau Margaux 1er Grand Cru 1976 (1 x 750mL), Margaux, Bordeaux, France.

Lot No: 0008-2472210

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tannic concentration may be exceptional, it’s rare to detect astringency. The great vintages are distinguished by their formidable ability to move us. The lesser vintages give pleasure to wise enthusiasts. They offer the advantage of evolving very rapidly and, reveal, after a few years, instead of power, this subtlety that is the prerogative of great terroirs. Château Margaux has an extraordinary ability to evolve. Over the years, it has developed a finesse, an aromatic complexity and a remarkable presence on the palate. (261639-6)

Chateau Margaux 1er Grand Cru 1975 (1 x 750mL), Margaux, Bordeaux, France.

Lot No: 0011-2472210

Appellation: Margaux A.C., Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux. First Growth of 1855 Classification.

This vintage, which was immediately acknowledged in Bordeaux as a great success, developed very slowly in bottle, especially those wines that were Cabernet Sauvignon-based. We have wondered since that time if the Cabernet had really been picked at full ripeness, in so far as the tannins had remained firm, or even hard, for so many years. It is very likely that today, such a vintage would produce a different wine, very probably as concentrated but more accessible. 1975 came after three particularly difficult years (1972, 1973 and 1974). Perhaps the potential of this vintage was overestimated through understandable enthusiasm. Château Margaux 1975 is not a very great success. The estate, which belonged to the Ginestet family, was about to be sold and very probably didn't enjoy the same care and attention it had received during the 1960s. (261639-9)

Kirin Fuji Sanroku Blended Japanese Whisky (2 x 700ml), Japan

Lot No: 0010-2472017

Kirin Fuji Sanroku Blended Japanese Whisky (2 x 700ml), Japan

A Japanese exclusive, this high ABV bottling from Kirin was launched in March 2016. The blend features medium and heavy-type grain whiskies combined with a minor peated malt component. Chief blender, Jota Tanaka also decided to bottle this non-chill filtered and at 50%. According to Nonjatta, ``The new ‘Fujisanroku 50°C’ is the first generally and permanently available, entry-level NC Japanese blended whisky that is not chill-filtered. A bold move but one that, we are sure, will pay off. It sure does for us drinkers… the first sip you take, you know!``

Almost unknown outside of Japan, Fuji Sanroku which means ``at the foot of Mount Fuji``, is produced in Fuji Gotemba distillery, opened in 1973 and owned by the Kirin Group. As iconic locations go, it`s hard to beat this distillery`s picturesque environ. The water source is rain and melted snow from the top of Mount Fuji. Maturation typically takes place in x-Bourbon barrels. While the focus is on grain whisky, a quantity of malt whisky is also produced and marketed under various labels (Gotemba & Sanroku), as well as making up a component of the Kirin blended whiskies. It`s the Committee Release of Ardbeg Kelpie, a single malt released in 2017 having been matured in casks made from virgin Black Sea oak and more traditional bourbon casks

Aroma

A wonderful, intense, ‘dancing’ nose, with lots of different, intertwined aromas – powerful, oily peat, dark chocolate, smoked fish, hints of seaweed, and a curious, sharp herbal note. Waves of spicy, black pepper. A splash of water brings forth some classic Ardbeg notes, such as creamy coffee, smoked fudge and pine resin. Even some hints of smoked coconut

Palate

A peppery mouthfeel is followed by a crescendo of rich flavours. Treacle toffee, Turkish coffee, smoky bacon and lots of dark, dark chocolate. A curious burst of peachy, estery fruit, hickory wood, clove oil and a suggestion of black olives on the aftertaste. Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar and rich toffee.

One of the world`s greatest makers of fortified wines, Seppeltsfield, in the Barossa Valley, has a superb history of making long lived, extremely good value ports.Seppeltsfield aim to make a Vintage Fortified that is drier and more refined than the traditional Australian style with an intensity of flavour derived from fruit quality rather than high Baume. The 2001 Seppeltsfield Barossa Valley Fortified utilises a backbone of richly flavoured Shiraz combined with a portion of Touriga that adds complexity and lift. Presented in 375ml this wine will reward careful cellaring. (253191-106)
