Lot No: 0025-2470814

Bin 707 perfectly reflects the Penfolds ‘House Style’ through a cabernet sauvignon lens: intensely-flavoured fruit; completion of fermentation and maturation in new oak; expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2016 (6 x750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0042-2470814

Provenance: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak.“Certainly not a definitive example Bin 389 of yore – this 2016 vintage release retains style yet pushes cabernet/shiraz blend boundaries … ever so deftly!””“Coincidentally or otherwise, a Japanese ‘demeanour’ unfolded during preview tastings – many Japanese-linked descriptors availed, some used, others not.” “Quercus alba – are you sure?! …Savoury, sandalwood nuances noted. No doubt, however, about this wine’s captivating sheen/poise.”- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker (259010-1)

Penfolds `Bin 95` Grange Hermitage 1972 (1 x 738mL) SA.

Lot No: 0012-2470814

The 1972 Penfolds Grange is a blend of 90 per cent Shiraz and 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine won a gold and four other medals at Australian wine shows in 1973, 1976 and 1977. Another outstanding vintage for Grange. From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over five decades. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.Penfolds Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses. An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a mature Grange, 15 to 20 years old, in fine condition, is one of the great wine experiences. Lot No: 0027-2470844

Torbreck Laird 2013 (1 x 750mL) Barossa Valley SA. Cork ClosureEvery now and then, in life and in wine, we are presented with unique opportunities to express ourselves and create something truly remarkable. When these rare opportunities arise, we need to capture, nurture and develop them so that their potential is fulfilled. So when we were given the opportunity to work with one of the most famous vineyards in the Barossa Valley, We were determined to use all our experience to ensure the resulting wine was truly remarkable.Every great wine in the world has its roots buried in the terroir of a breathtaking vineyard, and the Laird is no exception. Owned by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, fruit for the Laird comes from the Gnadenfrei vineyard, nestled on a gentle south facing slope on the eastern side of a ridge separating the Seppeltsfield and Marananga appellations in the Barossa Valley. Bearing the ‘Seppelt’ family name, Malcolm has his roots in this area buried as deep as the old vines on his property. Planted in 1958, the 5 acres of Shiraz is embedded in very dark heavy clay loam over red friable clay. The vineyard is meticulously hand tended, un-irrigated and littered with the footprints of Malcolm himself. The resulting small, concentrated Shiraz berries produced consistently on the property make it the envy of all winemakers in the valley. (SN:252153-2) (250684-433)

Lot No: 0002-2470814

Another Penfolds classic. Another blend of Barossa (Kalimna) Shiraz and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Made by John Duval. I’ve had it since but below is my note from the 2007 Penfolds Rewards of Patience tastings. This is the 1990 red wine Penfolds had to have. It inspires a beautiful set of numbers in your mouth. It’s got mint but it sits in the background, and because of that it’s better than any other 1990 Penfolds red by, to my taste and preference, a long degree. Fresh, savoury, developing steadily, correctly and well. Classic wine. Liquorice and blackcurrant and tobacco-herbs. This is a wine and a half. Great crack of tannin and dark berried flavour. Dimension.Rating 98 - Drink to 2030 Cambpbell Mattinson, Wine Front 25 September 2013. (260272-1)

Penfolds `RWT` Shiraz 2009 (2 x 750mL), Barossa, SA.

Lot No: 0027-2470814

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that area hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for 'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a 'Trial' !RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.“In a year like 2009, many commentators may consider this progeny of the Barossa to be more European in style? Perhaps, perhaps not. RWT continues to offer an alternative single-region Penfolds Shiraz experience.
