Penfolds Bin 95 Grange 1990 (1x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0001-2476842

Langton’s Classified: ExceptionalTop Vintage

From the 1990 vintage, Grange Hermitage will be labelled simply ‘Grange’ – the name by which it has been known internationally for many years. It is an icon that symbolises Australian quality wine at its highest level. History will record 1990 as one of the great Australian vintages of our generation. The 1990 Penfolds Grange is one of the best yet, with the potential to eventually rival the classic vintages of 1955, 1962 and 1971. Sourced from premium vineyards in South Australia, the 1990 Penfolds Grange is predominantly Shiraz (Hermitage) with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. With its solid structure and strength of character it will age gracefully and should be carefully cellared for a bare minimum of 10 years, and preferably 25 to 30. (266176-67)

Penfolds `St Henri` Shiraz 2006 (2 x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0049-2476842

Penfolds St Henri is a highly successful and alternative expression of Shiraz and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. It was created in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957) and gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood.St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1460-litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz. (265820-35)

Penfolds Bin 95 Grange 1995 (1x 750mL) SA.

Lot No: 0012-2476842

The 1995 Grange was the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag internationally and domestically for the Australian wine industry.Created by the legendary winemaker, the late Max Schubert, Grange’s weight and concentration can be traced to rigorous selection of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes from mature vines in some of South Australia’s finest vineyards. The quantity of Grange made each year is determined by the availability of grapes of the required quality and style. Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending policy enables winemakers to reduce the impact of vintage variation to the point where experts the world over consider Grange to be among the most consistent of the world’s great wines. Penfolds Bin 95 Grange 2000 (1x 750mL) SA.

Lot No: 0022-2476842

The 2000 Penfolds Grange is an excellent example of the Grange style transcending a most challenging South Australian 2000 vintage.A mouth-filling, generous and expansive palate, as expected of this marque. Dark chocolate and plum fruits court a deceptive play of substantial ripe tannins and, at this relatively early stage, provide for a more powerful Grange stamp on the palate than on the nose. Oak plays a supportive role and is perfectly integrated and absorbed. This is a wine of admirable balance and poise, with trademark mid-palate richness. (266176-84)

The pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range - Grange is a rich, opulent, full-bodied Shiraz, destined for a long cellar life. Penfolds Bin 95 Grange 1996 (1x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0013-2476842

Grange is the benchmark by which other Australian reds are often measured. Grange is decadently rich with layer upon layer of flavor that coats the tongue and generously lingers minutes after swallowing. Abundant aromas leap from a glass of Grange and defy the typical adjectives used by wine tasters. These are hedonistic aromas of rich, ripe fruits and spice, yet with an 'otherness' of which wine tasters speak of in hushed tones.Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades. First produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '96 Grange represents 46 years of winemaking excellence. (265027-81)

Lot No: 0044-2476842

Penfolds Re-corking Clinic 2006 - 3/184.

While Grange is now seen as the quintessential Australian wine, John Davoren's work with St. Henri is of equal importance. Indeed both these wines set new standards for their day with St. Henri establishing an elegant, perfumed style based on fruit definition and maturation in old oak.Originally the wines were called 'Penfolds St. Henri Claret', but since 1991, with the release of the 1989 vintage, St. Henri has been labelled varietally. Like Grange, the wines have always been Shiraz driven, with small varying percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon.Nowadays St. Henri is a multi-district blend drawing Shiraz from the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, the foothills of the Adelaide Hills, and Langhorne Creek. Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides firmness and structure to the St. Henri style, is sourced from the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and Bordertown. (266176-118)

Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe and intensely-flavoured Shiraz and some Cabernet grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy. This has been worth the wait. A complete wine, the description of which is not subservient to words - surely a good sign. The wine is at the other end of the Grange spectral offer to its predecessor, the 2001, purely as a result of two very different climatic vintages. (266176-87)

Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Poor Man’s Grange’ or ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds’ solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of cabernet with the richness of shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds’ skill in balancing fruit and oak. A classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity.
