Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2001 (3x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0094-2478432

Langton’s Classified: ExcellentTop Vintage

Penfolds St. Henri is a counterpoint to Penfolds Grange. St. Henri is a highly successful, alternative expression of Shiraz. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on new oak. It was created in the mid-1950s (first commercial vintage 1957) and gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood.Penfolds St. Henri is rich and plush when young and gains soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1460-litre vats that allow the wine to develop, but imparting no oak character. The focal point for St. Henri is Shiraz.Vintage ConditionsThe 2001 Penfolds St. Henri already shows greatpotential and is possibly the best since 1998! The source regions for this wine experienced good winter rain, setting the season off well for spring vine development. Exceptional heat in January extended through the late summer months until rain brought relief in most regions in mid-March. Penfolds access to well managed vineyards across the country enabled a careful selection of premium quality blend (267179-2)

Lot No: 0088-2478432

Penfolds Bin 128 is one of the most distinctive reds in the Penfolds stable. Firstly, as a ‘Coonawarra Shiraz’, it is one of the few Penfolds reds that isn’t a multi-regional blend. It is also one of only two Penfolds reds, Clare Estate being the other, to be matured solely in French oak. (267826-4)

Lot No: 0085-2478432

The First Vintage

In the Penfolds tradition of trial and innovation our winemakers embarked on a project in 1995 titled 'RWT' - meaning 'Red Winemaking Trial' - to create a new Australian Shiraz integrating the rich, generous flavours of Barossa Valley Shiraz with the finesse of tightly-grained French oak. Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2003 (1x 750mL), SA. Cork closure

Lot No: 0092-2478432

The Barossa Valley endured the same drought conditions as most of the country with a very cool and dry winter followed by similar weather in spring. Above average temperatures with low rainfalls restricted yields, however dry weather after February allowed the vineyards to recover quickly. Shiraz produced a strong result with ripefruit, balanced tannins and clear varietal character. (266176-113)

Lot No: 0031-2478432

The 1995 Grange was the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag internationally and domestically for the Australian wine industry.Created by the legendary winemaker, the late Max Schubert, Grange’s weight and concentration can be traced to rigorous selection of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes from mature vines in some of South Australia’s finest vineyards. The quantity of Grange made each year is determined by the availability of grapes of the required quality and style. Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending policy enables winemakers to reduce the impact of vintage variation to the point where experts the world over consider Grange to be among the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Penfolds St. Henri style is a dramatic contrast to Penfolds Grange. St. Henri is pure, unadorned Shiraz, virtually alone among high-quality Australian reds in that it has never relied on new oak. It was created in the mid-1950s (first commercial vintage 1957) and has gained a new lease on life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood. (267179-1)

Penfolds 'Bin 95' Grange 1993 (1x 750mL), SA.

Lot No: 0030-2478432

Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in this country, and, increasingly, overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many yet straightforward. Concentration of flavour, complexity and longevity - Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. Vintage Conditions

South Australia’s wine districts experienced a cool and wet winter and spring, which provided the vines with good soil moisture profiles. Longstanding rainfall records were broken across South Australia, with some regions experiencing minor flooding. October was windy, which caused some challenges with fruit set, however these winds warded off any danger from frost in Padthaway and Barossa Valley vineyards. The prevailing cool conditions extended the growing season with flowering and veraison both later than expected. There were no heatwaves, with only a handful of days recording temperatures above 40 degrees. Warmer weather in March was welcomed, allowing the grapes to finish ripening with great colour and varietal character. Harvest for shiraz grapes didn’t commence until mid-March, a month later than the previous year. History First produced in 1959, Bin 28 is Penfolds earliest Bin-range wine. The first releases were single-vineyard wines made from the renowned Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Bin 28 was first made while Grange was still being made in secrecy. (265798-4)

Penfolds 'Bin 95' Grange 2000 (1x 750mL) SA.

Lot No: 0002-2478432

The 2000 Penfolds Grange is an excellent example of the Grange style transcending a most challenging South Australian 2000 vintage.A mouth-filling, generous and expansive palate, as expected of this marque. Dark chocolate and plum fruits court a deceptive play of substantial ripe tannins and, at this relatively early stage, provide for a more powerful Grange stamp on the palate than on the nose. Oak plays a supportive role and is perfectly integrated and absorbed. This is a wine of admirable balance and poise, with trademark mid-palate richness. (266176-85)
