Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2015 (6 x 750mL), SA.

St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak.Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1,460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz.“We’d like to say: St Henri, 1895 – 2015: A style 120 years young! But, we don’t know for sure. Some records indicate the first St Henri may have been created as early as 1890!”“St Henri: style conviction. Definition. Still a ‘Claret’ style, but not legally. Distractingly a 7% Cabernet inclusion reminds us of earlier times, and its earlier moniker.”- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Penfolds `Bin 707` Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (1 x 1.5L Magnum) SA.

Bin 707 is Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Grange equivalent: ripe, intensely-flavoured fruit; completing fermentation and matured in new American oak; and expressing the Penfolds’ policy of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit-sourcing. Named by an ex-Qantas marketing man, Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964. The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 (when the focus shifted to Bin 389) nor in 1981, 1995 or 2000 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full bodied and with good cellaring potential, Bin 707 has a secure place among the ranks of Australia’s finest Cabernets. Packaged in laser-etched bottles from the 1997 vintage.

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak.“Certainly not a definitive example Bin 389 of yore – this 2016 vintage release retains style yet pushes cabernet/shiraz blend boundaries … ever so deftly!””“Coincidentally or otherwise, a Japanese ‘demeanour’ unfolded during preview tastings – many Japanese-linked descriptors availed, some used, others not.” “Quercus alba – are you sure?! …Savoury, sandalwood nuances noted. Penfolds `Block 42` Kalmina Cabernet Sauvignon 1996 (1 x 750mL)5 Star Prov

Lot No: 0004-2474945

Provenance: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★Planted around 1888, Block 42 is located at the edge of the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley and is home to Cabernet Sauvignon vines of ancient genetic origins.

The 10-acre Block 42 comprises what are believed to be the oldest plantings of continuously producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world. For over 120 vintages these vines have produced flavour-intense, mineral-rich fruit with exceptional concentration and balance.Providing ‘lift and structure’, Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon was blended into many early bottlings of Penfolds Grange. The Block 42 vineyard continues to be an important component of Bin 707, providing backbone and substance to the overall style. There have only been a handful of releases across the decades due to the low-yielding nature of the Block 42 site. The most recent was made from the 2004 vintage and was sold en primeur - Penfolds was the first Australian winery to use this selling method made famous by the chateaux of Bordeaux. With a bit of luck, ideal weather conditions, the right parcels of fruit and when the fruit is not required for Bin 707, Block 42 will continue to be periodically released – potentially more than once in a decade. St. Henri is an enigma in modern Australia in that it is a richly flavoured Shiraz wine that does not rely on the flavour support of new oak. Rather than the typical use of small, often new barriques and hogsheads to mature Shiraz, St. Henri is matured mostly in large, 2000 litre oak casks that impart almost no wood characters.
