Expert Reviews

94 Points. Campbell Mattinson - Wine Front. 20 March 2008

Tyrrell’s Double Barrel Shiraz spends 12 months in new oak before being decanted into a fresh set of new barrels for a further 12 months. It’s double-barrelled winemaking at its modern old-fashioned best (yes, modern old-fashioned).

It tastes – of course – overwhelmingly of custardy, chocolaty, honeyed oak, with syrupy black fruit flavour jetting away in the background. It is monumentally smooth and rich, yet it has just started to soften and evolve – sings of leatheriness have just started to appear. There’s also quite a bit of acidity. This wine is either disgusting or incredibly yum, depending on your take.

90 Points. James Halliday - Wine Companion. 1 July 2008

Certainly shows a year in barrel (used?) and then another year in new oak; the winemakers thought the fruit justified the expense; I am not convinced.

Brand Profile Image

English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell's Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.

Today, Tyrrell's are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria.

Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future.

Tyrrell's Wines was awarded Winery Of The Year by James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010.
