Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon has established itself as one of Australia's favourite premium red wines. Since its first vintage in 1976, Koonunga Hill's reputation has been built upon widespread acclaim, including its most recent accolade - Great Value Red Wine of the Year - awarded to the 1999 vintage at the 2001 International Wine Challenge in London. Koonunga Hill is very much a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia, the wine is known for its full flavoured style with excellent varietal fruit, firm but well-rounded structure and balanced oak.

Winery Tasting Notes

Bright crimson.

A youthful mix of varietal Shiraz cinnamon and clove, standing above Cabernet berried notes meshed with dark cherry and summer pudding fruits. An element of appealing savoury oak is evident, providing structure and complexity.

The palate displays a commendable balance of vibrant fruit and well-handled oak, with trademark mid-palate richness. The wine has impressive weight, length and persistence of flavour with stewed plum, rhubarb and dark berry prominent.

Vintage Condition

The source regions for this wine experienced good winter rain, setting the season off well for spring vine development. Exceptional heat in January extended through the late summer months until rain brought relief in most regions in mid-March. Penfolds' access to well managed vineyards across the country enabled a careful selection of premium-quality blending components for the final wine.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
