Vintage Conditions

A consistent theme across South Australia was the healthy and above-average winter rainfall. This not only fuelled strong canopy framework but resulted in welcomed soil water reserves, safeguarding vines across the months that followed. Unswerving from the trend of the 2000s was an earlier budburst, flowering and harvest across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the south east. Whilst not without challenges from September hail and strong spring winds, Shiraz experienced relatively even set. A November hot spell and replenishing rain pushed the vines ahead in maturity. December temperatures were cooler than November, offering vines ideal growing conditions through to veraison in early January. Mild and dry ripening conditions were complimented by cool nights, with healthy vines yielding fruit that exhibited optimum flavour, and colour development, varietal typicity and vibrancy.

Expert Reviews

Arguably the most anticipated Penfolds release of '14, this is a standout St Henri of the modern era. The gentle touch of maturation in large, old vats propels the purity and definition of a benchmark vintage. It's elegant and effortless, framing impeccable fruit in finely honed tannins; a shiraz of space, grace, and enduring longevity. - James Halliday

Very deep purple-black in color and showing an attractive nose of warm blackcurrants, blueberries and licorice with a complex undercurrent of mocha, cedar, menthol and grilled meat, the full-bodied 2010 St Henri Shiraz is relatively rich in the mouth, offering tons of fruit structured by firm, fine tannins and refreshing acid. It finishes with great persistence. Drink it 2015 to 2030+. - 97+ Points, The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Purple rim, black core.

Blackness prevails… black pudding, black shoe polish (and tanned leather), black liquorice, black olive, black jelly-beans? Scents of liqueured cherry, saturated dark plum, beetroot and a cooling humbug peppermint impression. From beneath, a waft of dark paste – quince/mocha/praline/coffee grind… ristretto (double!)

How much space do we have ? A complex/kaleidoscopic flavour mosaic presides. These flavours appear turbo-charged – liqueured fruits, elderberry, wild raspberry, pomegranate, praline, almond. Full-bodied – rich, dark and concentrated, and yet still chewy, fresh and youthful – potently geared/tuned. Excellent length – driven by waves of intense fruits, a well of unbridled fine tannins, and a wash of awakening acidity.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
