Named as a tribute to the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers, many of whom carried the first name of Johann. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts. Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their garden, from the German Weingarten. This blend is just one of those blessings. The traditions and culture have survived to this day, including the winemaking techniques used in this grenache blend. It is produced from low-yielding, old, gnarled, dry-grown bush and trellised vines on limestone soils from selected vineyards.

Expert Reviews

A 66/29/5% blend of grenache, viognier and shiraz (for structure); 3-4-year-old oak 12 months then blended for bottling. Good colour, but less vivid than Henry's Seven; considerable texture, almost viscous; liqueur cherry/raspberry; spicy, wonderful grenache; very good mouthfeel; black fruits, licorice, glossy finish. Rating 95 - Drink by 2019 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2013)

Like so many of the Henschke wines, it’s the weight and feel that triumphs. Its got pulped raspberry and spicy length, lot of structured tannin and great balance. Rated - 94 (May/2013)

Garnet with violet hues, the wine has complex aromas of red plums, red berries and a hint of aniseed. The palate is luscious with a smooth texture and fine tannins in the long finish. Mount Barker Courier, (10/JUL/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Grape Variety

66% grenache, 29% mataro and 5% shiraz grapes grown in the Barossa Valley.

Deep garnet with violet hues.

Intense aromas of plums, raspberries, blueberries, lavender and rosehip spice with deeper underlying nuances of briary black fruits, cloves, anise and chocolate.

The rich, lush palate is concentrated with dark fruits and spices, a beautifully soft and creamy texture, and fine-grained tannins for a long and savoury finish.

Exceptional vintage, 20+ years (from vintage).

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.
