Winery Tasting Notes

Hentley Farm's founder Keith Hentschke was a perfectionist when it came to matching specific sites with clonal characteristics, using agricultural science expertise to get the best out of the grape and the site. To this day the same philosophy resonates in the vineyards and the A2 Block is a perfect example. Originally planted as Cabernet(and not that successful), this A2 Block, with west facing orientation and deep red soils with clay layers is now Shiraz planted and rightly so when you taste this vintage. The blue and red fruit intensity is perfectly balanced with the hints of licquorice, peppercorns and spices. The palate follows the red fruits through to the darker broody black fruits and hints of cocoa, with a supple and intense finish.

5 Red Star Rated & 2015 James Halliday Wine Companion Winery of the Year

Set on the red-brown soils of the western Barossa Valley, Hentley Farm founders Keith and Alison Hentschke acquired the 150 acre vineyard and mixed farming property in the 1990s. Following extensive research to find out where the best red wine grapes in the Barossa Valley were being produced, their studies led them towards the rich red soils of the Seppeltsfield area. Keith used an old soil map from the 1950s to strategically locate the best parcels of land and after a number of years acquired Hentley Farm.

With a focus on perfecting the vineyards, the first wines weren’t released from the property until 2002. The estate was extended with the purchase of the neighbouring high quality Clos Otto block in 2004.
