Expert Reviews

91 Points. Gary Walsh - Wine Front. 24 May 2009

I bought this at cellar door in the Sydney Olympic Year of Our Lord 2000 – and doesn’t that seem a lifetime ago on a night like this? This vintage, and a good one at that, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Petit Verdot (22%), Shiraz (10%) and Merlot (8%). It was very good as a young wine, although not quite as convincing in middle age – most likely inbetween days I suspect.

Violet and rubbed tobacco with liquorice allsorts, a strong earthiness (you might also say gaminess) and sweet (verging on jammy) fruit. It’s still got plenty of grip and mouth-traction in the form of grainy tannin plus bright fresh acidity and that core of sweet raspberry fruit. Length good, and for a medium bodied wine, it also has a fair bit of oomph but gives an impression of being in transition. I have a number of bottles left (2 or 3 I think) and I’ll be leaving them for a bit longer yet.

Winery Profile

Lake's Folly was the first new vineyard in the Hunter Valley last century, established by Max Lake and his family in 1963. The tradition continues, with the first boutique winery in Australia making only two wines, a red (Cabernet blend) and a white (100% Chardonnay), using all estate grown fruit.

The property changed hands in early 2000 to Peter Fogarty and his family who, along with local Hunter winemaker Rod Kempe, have continued to maintain the integrity and direction of the Folly.

In the vineyard, quality is derived primarily from the terroir. The old vines, now well and truly self regulated to produce low cropping high quality fruit, are well established and give consistency even in difficult years.

The winemaking aspect is very simple. Hand picking, gentle crushing and traditional open fermentation for the reds, barrel fermentation and extended yeast lees contact for the Chardonnay. Judicious use of French oak, small barrel maturation for both, hand bottling and that's it, no more, no less.
