The 2016 vintage provided exceptional fruit, which we selected from our Katunga and Johnston prolific vineyards and blocks Oakley, Eric’s’, Sellicks’ and Osmond. The bouquet shows aromas of ripe Damson plum, blackberry conserve, blueberry and Geranium, enhanced by hints of mint and subtle vanilla oak. The palate displays rich mulberry, cherry ripe, toffee apple and dark chocolate notes, complemented by spice and strawberry flavours. This early drinking style supplies fruit, tannin and acid in harmonious balance. Drink now or under right cellaring conditions until 2022.
5-Star Winery - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition
In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.
Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.
2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)
The 2007 Pirramimma ACJ has won the coveted Glenelly Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the prestigious 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine a unique blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon has won this fantastic award above all other blended wines from across the globe. Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.
"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
