Winery Tasting Notes

The legend of Phar Lap embodies the soul of Australia during the Great Depression.

Plain and gangly as a young colt, Harry Telford, his trainer, developed Phar Lap into a great champion.

Phar Lap began his racing career in 1929 at Rosehill, Sydney. In 1930, 72`000 people watched Phar Lap wine the Melbourne Cup. He later raced in Mexico and beat the world's best in the Agua Caliente Handicap.

He died 15 days later, from a mysterious cause. Flags were flown at half mast in Australia and newspapers in America ran his obituary on black bordered front pages. Damon Runyon in a front page story argued that the "Big Red" was not poisoned, but still the nation plunged into mourning.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
