Overview

Bin 389 is a very traditional Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and today it is truly a multi regional blend drawing from as many as seven different regions depending on the vintage. Although quite different to Grange it is unmistakably Penfolds in style, with fleshy, ripe fruit flavours and chary oak.

This vintage of Bin 389 is outstanding and will rival the classic vintage of 1990 in the years to come.

Expert Reviews

One of the very best 389s, this wonderfully deep, dark and savoury wine presents a sumptuous, seamless integration of intense spicy dark berry fruits, plums and licorice with smooth, smoky American oak and velvet-like firm tannins. Its restrained strength and balance suggest an exceptional future. Rating 97, Drink 2008 to 2016+, Jeremy Oliver

Medium to full red-purple; a dense wine on the bouquet with layers of earth, chocolate, berry and oak. Wonderfully sweet blackberry fruit is offset with sweet chocolate, and rounded off with sweet tannins and oak on the finish mark an exceptionally good Bin 389.

Rating 95 - Drink by 2016 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/1999)

Winery Tasting Notes

Rewards of Patience 6th edition, 2008

Colour

Deep red.

Aroma

Fresh, expressive wine with all the hallmarks of a 'Baby Grange'; lovely inky blackberry, meaty, cedar, graphite aromas.

Palate

Dense, rich, generous, sweet-fruit flavours, underlying malt oak and slinky, chocolaty tannins. This is a great vintage with incredible fruit power and energy.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
