Domaine A is set in one ?of the most pristine natural environments?in the world.

Established in 1973, the historic Stoney Vineyard is the oldest in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Just half an hour's drive from the city of Hobart, the 11ha single vineyard domaine is owned and operated by H. Peter and Ruth Althaus. It is the culmination of a long and exhaustive world-wide search for terroir ideally suited to cool-climate viticulture.

Ancient soil and truly cool climate give rise to inspirational terroir founded on 200 million year old Jurassic Dolerite. Domaine A lies on a north facing slope that enjoys a temperate maritime climate and extended sunlight hours over a long, cool season. Domaine A experiences some of the longest sunshine hours in Australia, ensuring grapes ripen to develop the full spectrum of varietal character. The vineyard is close planted in the European tradition (1.9 x 0.9m), with a density of 6000 vines per hectare. The sloping North-North Easterly aspect and foliage height of 1400mm enables vines to take full advantage of prolonged sunshine. Annual rainfall is often less than 500mm. Grapes ripen well into late April and early May, bringing flavours of great subtlety and intensity to the wines.

Varieties grown include red grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir and the white grape Sauvignon Blanc.

Winery Tasting Notes

Tasmania is regarded as Australia’s premier cool climate Pinot Noir growing region. Domaine A Pinot Noir is a substantial style with fine tannic structure and great longevity. The small 2ha plot of low yielding Pinot Noir vines is situated on the highest part of the vineyard slope at Domaine A. Low yields of 4.5 tonnes per ha and small, concentrated berries mean it takes two vines to make a single bottle of fine Domaine A Pinot Noir.

Winemaking includes small batch open fermentation, gentle hand plunging and maturation in seasoned French oak barriques for approximately 18 months to ensure true varietal expression. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Winery Profile

Peter and Ruth Althaus purchased the Stoney Vineyard, in Coal River near Hobart, Tasmania, in 1989. Originally planted in 1973, the vineyard's unique terroir, with a long, dry and mild growing season, is ideally suited to producing elegant, long-lived wines.

The vineyard has expanded to 20 hectares over the years, and is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are split between two wine labels - Stoney Vineyard', which is intended for immediate drinking, though has medium-term cellaring potential in better years, and the flagship releases which go under the 'Domaine A' label, which are suitable for long-term maturation. The wines are made the same way - unfiltered, unfined, with the acids never adjusted, and utilising the full-range of traditional wine-making techniques.

Awarded James Halliday's highest-level producer rating, and with shining endorsements from major wine critics from across the globe over many years, Domaine A is not just a strong candidate for Tasmania's finest producer, but one of the best producers in the country.
