Expert Reviews

96 Points. Winestate Magazine - 2016 Edition

95 Points. James Halliday - Wine Companion

Vines planted '52, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 10 days on skins, matured for 6 months in new French oak, followed by 34 months in demi-muids. A powerful, uncompromising full-bodied shiraz, but retains freshness and balance, the fruit outpacing the oak and the tannins. A long and healthy future is assured.

92 Points. Qwine Reviews - 12 April 2017

This vineyard was planted in the 1950's with a popular cafe on one boundary, hence the name. Sweet fruited early, dense and firm through the middle. Blackcurrant, mulberry fruit, cocoa and cedar - quite attractive really. Fine brick dust tannins coat the mouth with a pepper sprinkle finish. Delicious drinking. I'll have a steak to match please.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Old Faithful Estate is rated a 4 Star Winery by James Halliday.

McLaren Vale is home to some of the most treasured Old Vine plantings in the world today, with the earliest known plantings dating back to 1862. We affectionately refer to them as “The Old Faithful”. They are a resource we treasure dearly.

These wines show the deepest respect for a cluster of specific vineyard sites in McLaren Vale, each of them famous for consistently producing outstanding fruit from old vines. Since the Old Faithful wine brand was established in 2005, winemaker Nick Haselgrove has been fussy in producing these wines with maximum care and minimum interference, from the vine to the bottle. Accordingly, Old Faithful’s small range of shiraz, grenache and mourvedre wines capture the purest expression of their vineyard sites. Not all wines are made in all years – only when quality demands it and the winemaker is satisfied that the benchmarks of Old Faithful’s formidable reputation can be attained.
