Expert Reviews

Roman Bratasiuk’s Clarendon Hills is one of the world’s great wine estates. The wines are all 100% varietal, produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, and Syrah. The vineyards are all ungrafted, planted on their own roots, most of them with very old vines. Only French oak is utilized, seasoned barrels for the Grenache, 100% new for the Merlot and Cabernets, and 50-100% new for the Syrahs depending upon the vineyard. The wines typically spend 18 months in oak prior to bottling without fining or filtration.

This is an outstanding wine that needs plenty of time to evolve. The structure of this wine is superior to that of the previous vintage, however it needs plenty of time to develop its full potential. The marks given to this wine reflect its character at the time of tasting and we have no doubt that with a few years cellaring, the score will be perfect.

Totally opaque black purple colour. Perfumed, classic Cabernet nose of violets, blackcurrant and cedar. The palate remains to unfold, however flavours of violet infusions, concentrate of blackcurrant, cedar and white pepper emerge. The tannins are fine grained, dry but perfectly balanced. The aftertaste is exceptional with very long blackcurrant, spice and white pepper emerging.

Robert Parker 95 points!

"The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Hickinbotham Vineyard is the most backward and Pauillac-like of this trio. Its inky/purple color is followed by gorgeous aromas of cedar, black currant liqueur, flowers, licorice, and a notion of new oak in the background. This full-throttle, powerful, concentrated, well-delineated Cabernet Sauvignon should be at its finest between 2010-2025."

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 161 Oct 2005.
