Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that area hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for 'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a 'Trial' !

RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

“In a year like 2009, many commentators may consider this progeny of the Barossa to be more European in

style? Perhaps, perhaps not. RWT continues to offer an alternative single-region Penfolds Shiraz experience. The 2009 marquee: Complete, Charmed, Contemporary.”

“Decanting essential—especially if bottled under screw cap.”Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Expert Reviews

Deep, dense purple-crimson; the bouquet sets the scene with interwoven black fruits and cedary French oak; the palate is exceedingly complex, intense and layered; the flavours are spicy, black-fruited, with licorice and bitter chocolate, fine, lingering tannins provide the framework. Rating 97 - Drink by 2040 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2012)

Plush and very contemporary, this opulent, fine-grained shiraz has a heady bouquet of cassis, blueberries, plums and cedar, smoky vanilla oak backed by suggestions of bacon, cloves and licorice. Sweetly fruited, it’s long and gentle, with creamy oak smoothing out its sumptuous presence of bright, juicy small berry flavours. Underpinned by fine, polished tannin, it finishes with freshness, length and balance.

Rating 95 - Drink from 2021 - 2029+, Jeremy Oliver,

Winery Tasting Notes

Glossy. Deep red with a magenta rim.

Varietal berried fruits laden with a spray of exotic spices from afar. Scents of red apple skin (Fuji, Pink Lady ?) and cold cured meats propelled … yes, an unusual pairing. French oak makes a late appearance … a sesame/tahini guise, not that of cedar.

Plush. Plummy, Persuasive. Convincingly Barossa by birthright and Penfolds by style: blueberry/plummy fruits avec juniper; custom-built, trademark rich mid-palate. Charcuterie, cold (Polish) meat artefact that may well be Shiraz fruit-derived; moreover, peat/coal dust undertones that have, without doubt, been acquired courtesy of the oak and time. Tannins and a buoyant and balanced acidity court a long and persistent finish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
