Overview

For a relative newcomer on the Australian wine scene, or indeed by any standards, the Clare Valley's Kilikanoon has done stupendously well. With accomplishments including a 5 red-star and red name rating and Winery of the Year for 2013 from James Halliday, multiple gold medals and trophies from competitions across the world, and high praise from wine critics, winemaker Kevin Mitchell has to be regarded as one of the premier vignerons in Australia.

This bottle of 2003 vintage Oracle Shiraz still has years ahead of it, but nevertheless shows signs of mature complexity amidst its youthful fruit. Delicious and hedonistic.

Expert Reviews

The blockbuster 2002 Shiraz Oracle, aged in 300 liter French hogsheads (50% new and 50% 1-year-old), possesses classic blackberry, graphite, and cassis notes, a full-bodied, powerful style, great definition and purity, and surprising elegance and lightness for a wine of this size and richness. Approachable now, it should age nicely for 15 or more years. Rating 97, Robert Parker, Drink 2006 - 2021, Wine Advocate #167

Deeper colour than the Covenant; powerful, rich, concentrated blackberry, earthy fruit; impressive structure and texture, with ripe tannins and assured oak. Estate-grown. Rating 94, Drink by 2015, Tasted Oct 2005, James Halliday

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2002 Oracle Shiraz was created by combining traditional winemaking techniques with maturation in small French and American oak casks. This hand made wine is both complex and rewarding, having had no filtration prior to bottling to preserve the rich plum and spicy fruit flavours. All fruit was estate grown and sourced from low yielding, hand pruned and hand picked vines from our Leasingham vineyards in the Clare Valley.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.
