Expert Reviews

Rating 96 - James Halliday - Published on 10 Jul 2013, Australian Wine Companion

Purple-crimson; it's not hard to understand why Dean Hewitson boldly puts 'cellaring potential 20 years' on the front label, for this complex and intense wine coming, as it does, from exceedingly old vines; satsuma plum, liqueur cherries, spice and fruitcake fill the palate from start to finish, the tannins fine and ripe, oak merely a vehicle.

Rating 93+ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate #205, Feb 2013

Deep purple-black in color, the 2010 Private Cellar Shiraz, Mourvedre shows off pronounced cassis, macerated blackberry and black plum notes over lavender, damp earth, black olives, sage and black pepper nuances. Medium-bodied, it is nicely poised in the mouth around a core of complex, earthy fruit flavors that are offset by medium levels of finely grained tannins, refreshing acid and a long, layered finish. It is approachable now and should drink best 2014 to 2024+.

Rating 95 - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front on Sep-2013

Talking of the synergy between Shiraz and Mataro, here's another wine that uses it to great effect. Only, it's a bit more expensive.

Winery Tasting Notes

The Private Cellar label allows us to personally select what we consider to express the best from each vintage.

What sets the wines of `Hewitson` apart from others is our predominately dry-grown vineyards dating back to the 1800s having very deep root systems. These roots in some cases go down ten metres into the sub soil.

These vines have their own biological clock and it is of little consequence what is going on around them above the earth. Their drive is sourced from the nutrients and water derived deep underground. It is this inheritance that provides the foundations for the making of great wine.
