Winery Tasting Notes

The Shiraz Viognier is their flagship, a careful selection of the best of the Shiraz Viognier parcels we craft from our Murrumbateman vineyard

The 2016 vintage was generous and early. Late summer temperatures were consistently warmer than average and a larger than average crop proved to be a double blessing, slowing the ripening, which would have otherwise raced ahead, and filling the fermenters in our newly expanded winery with some of the most opulent, spice laden, dark berry fruit we have seen. A powerful vintage with great cellaring potential.

Medals & Trophies

‘This is a truly glorious wine that draws you back again’ – 98 Points James Halliday

“Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier has lost none of its charm or power over the years, but it has become a lighter, more elegant and more finely drawn wine. The subtle change is clearly evident with this 2016. For a long time we’ve played with the term Burgundian Shiraz, especially in relation to Clonakilla, but the phrase is becoming increasingly apt. This wine is light on its feet, perfumed, exotic, marshalled with fruit and spice, and tannic. It doesn’t wallop you upfront; it saves itself for the finish. It’s not an impetuous wine. There are candied notes here, dry spices, woody anise, a whisper of peppercorn. I would almost describe this wine as crisp, such is its lack of gloop, its finesse, its cleansing run of flavour-infused acidity. This release will age magnificently.” – 96 Points Campbell Mattinson

“Medium to deep red colour with a good rim of purple, the bouquet is fresh and pepper/spicy with a decidedly foresty whole-bunch nuance. A lovely complex bouquet, which will only get moreso with time. The palate fllows on from the nose precisely, with intense spice and berry flavours, a hint of violets and some floral nuances. A perfumed, high-toned, supremely elegant red wine.” – 97 Points Huon Hooke

Winery Profile

Through the seventies and eighties the Cabernet and Shiraz were blended together in traditional Australian style. With the 1990 vintage we decided to bottle the wines separately. Our first Shiraz went on to win two gold, one silver and two trophies in only three showings.

In 1991 Tim travelled to the Rhone valley in France. There he tasted a number of impressive Shiraz wines including Marcel Guigal’s single vineyard blends of Shiraz and the rare white grape Viognier. Inspired by those wines we began including a small amount of Viognier in our own Shiraz as of 1992. We incorporated other winemaking approaches borrowed from Rhone valley and Burgundian winemakers: inclusion of whole bunches in the ferments; pre-ferment maceration; warm natural ferments and maturation in high quality French oak barrels.

We worked harder in the vineyard to open up the vine leaf canopies, limit yields and produce grapes with riper flavour profiles. We began to understand that in planting Shiraz on decomposed granite soils in the cool, continental climate of Murrumbateman we had found something important. It became clear to us that the Canberra District had the potential to become one of Australia’s great Shiraz regions. The Clonakilla has received numerous accolades over the last fifteen years and many fantastic critics views.

Clonakilla style is essentially about fruit leading the wood. It is a highly aromatic wine with ginger, white, pepper, apricot fruit, some savoury French oak nuances and fine slinky/boney tannins.
