Expert Reviews

Rating 94 - James Halliday - Published on 20 Jul 2011, Australian Wine Companion

Medium red; the bouquet is starting to evolve, with clean, scented fruit and hints of sweet leather. An interesting palate with savoury, sweet leather and briar flavours around the core of cherry fruit; has a particularly good finish, and is absolutely the best of the old vine wines to be so far released by Tahbilk.

Rating (17.5+/20 if a good bottle?) TAHBILK VERTICAL TASTINGS - Raymond Chan, Monday 29 May and Tuesday 13 June 2006

Deepish garnet red colour. Tight on nose, with a little mustiness. Quite developed with savoury and forest-like tertiary bouquet. Quite dry with a little mustiness. Cork tainted? But the wine is essentially elegant and very fine-grained in mouthfeel.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma/Palate

This complex Wine Show,s intence berry and spice fruit characters combined with cinnamon undertones whilst the finish is long and flavoursome, balanced with firm grape tannins and fine acidity.

Winemaking Notes

Tahbilk Reserve Shiraz is produced from our McLaughlin's block, planted on the Estate in 1933. After careful handpicking, traditional Tahbilk winemaking texhniques are untilised with fermentation taking place in century old open oak vats followed by maturation in French oak for 18 months prior to bottling. Appropriately, an original Tahbilk label dating back to the 1870's has been adapted for this rare and unique wine.
