Mt Langi Ghiran `Langi Shiraz` Shiraz 1999 (2x 750ml), Great Western.Cork

Mount Langi Ghiran was put on the map by the inimitable Trevor Mast, former winemaker at Best's and (briefly) Seppelts. In his life time, Mast was able to bring cool-climate shiraz to the forefront of Australian wine, with the Langi Shiraz famously featuring on the cover of The Wine Spectator alongside Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, and earning a Wine Advocate 'International Winemaker of The Year' Award.

The 1999 vintage, an excellent year for shiraz, was one of the last Mast would complete at Mount Langi, selling the vineyard to the Rathbone family in 2002 and formally moving on in 2003. It shows all the characteristics that earned the wine its reputation: flavour, perfume, structure and cellaring potential.

Expert Reviews

Medium to full red-purple; has an archetypal Langi bouquet, offering a mix of spice, black cherry, mint, licorice and leather. The palate has lively, sweet fruit woven through the more minty/spicy characters of the bouquet, but slightly sharp acidity on the finish needs to integrate.

Winery Tasting Notes

Blessed be he who has given us a second great vintage since 1998!

The 1999 Shiraz has a deep crimson colour, solid varietal flavours and our hallmark spice integrated into the soft tannins and balanced acid, a guarentee of longevity when well cellared. Aged in 85% American and 15% French oak. Cellaring potential 12-15 years.
