Full-bodied, with uncompromising cabernet varietal fruit in regional mode: in other words, blackcurrant and earth on a tightly wound palate. Great future.

I’ve noticed an atypical bitterness on the finish of a number of 2006 reds – across a range of south-eastern Australian regions – and this wine has it too. I don’t necessarily mind it but it keeps distracting me.

I was also interested to see that Bowen Estate uses a Trademark term in the release notes for this wine. The trademarked term is “classic Coonawarra”. Amazing that they got that one through …

It’s a nice wine. But it needs time. It’s an intense, curranty, briary wine with lots of grippy, assertive tannin before that dark, bitter, chocolaty finish takes over. Excellent weight of flavour and it has the acid/fruit/oak/tannin balance to see it through for a good number of years. Cedary oak is evident but not overdone. Outstanding price too it has to be said.
