Chris Hill `Premier Select` GSM 2013 (12 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.

This wine continues my love affair with this blend. It has a solid backbone of ripe McLaren Vale Grenache and it captures the essence of the winemaker’s craft. 2013 produced big robust wines that carry lots of oak complexity and lovely scented spice.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour - The appearance is mid to deep red with lively cherry hues and solid core of deep garnet red. The rim of violet is a reminder of ripe Mataro berries.

Aroma - The nose is full of vibrant fresh plum, currant and cranberry with varietal spice and fragrant lavender overtones. Shiraz adds a hint of eucalypt and Mataro is sweet and rich with earthy spices delivering complexity and sophistication.

Palate - The palate is full and generous with raspberry and rhubarb adding to the fruit spectrum. The mid palate is solid and round with fleshy Shiraz tannins that add a savoury kick followed by earthy dried herbs. The intensity of flavour builds towards a dry, rounded finish with sweet oak and spice.

Food Matching - This is a wine for tender, slow cooked meats like lamb shank, Osso Bucco or beef gently roasted in a spicy marinade of olive oil, star anise, pepper and lashings of garlic. When the meat is falling off the bone it’s ready for the complex flavours of this original blend.

Cellaring Potential - This is an outstanding example of this traditional blend and will reward careful cellaring for 10 or more years.
