Hollick The Bard Chardonnay 2015 (6 x 750mL) Coonawarra

The BARD range celebrates the work of Australia’s best-known lyric poet John Shaw Neilson who was raised in the cottage on the Hollick Neilson’s Block vineyard. Revered by his peers in the world of literature, Neilson was born in Penola in 1872, and it is thought that much of the imagery in his poems was conjured up during his childhood experiences in the swampy bushland around Coonawarra.

Coonawarra’s summer for 2015, in contrast to the spring, has been a classic, with warm days and cool nights, strongly influenced by the January upwelling of the deep, cold coastal waters…. around 5 degrees colder than those off Adelaide. This has provided a long and cool ripening allowing maximum flavour and enhanced colours.

The grapes were picked at the coolest time of the day to protect the fruit, and it was harvested in two picks enabling the winemaking team to capture true varietal flavours in the fruit. It was then crushed and pressed and allowed to cold stabilise in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation was conducted in stainless steel, and the wine was bottled early to retain its crisp varietal characters.
