Nautilus Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017 (12 x 750mL), Malborough, NZ.

The fruit was machine harvested at night or in the cool of the morning, gently crushed and pressed then fermented with a variety of aromatic yeast strains in stainless steel tanks - the sole aim being to reflect and preserve the flavours and aromas grown in the vineyard. 30% of the juice fermentations were started with a non-saccharomyces yeast and 2% of the blend was barrel fermented. After fermentation, the wine was kept in contact with the lees for four months. This classic technique enhances creaminess and integrates flavours.

Harvest commenced on March 23rd and continued until April 10th for the 2016 Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc. A small shift in where the fruit was sourced in 2016 has resulted in a wine with a greater aromatic range than previous years and a softer, rounder palate structure. All fruit was fermented in tank with selected yeast strains, maintaining aromatic purity and capturing the essence of Marlborough. The wine was allowed to build additional interest and texture through extended lees aging post fermentation. True to its house style, the2016 displays lovely citrus drive but is noticeable also for its stonefruit and white currant notes. The palate is quintessentially Marlborough - bright and fresh with lovely a clean acid backbone carrying the fruit flavours to a long, pure finish.

Giesen Brothers Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (6 x 750mL), Marlborough NZ.

Winemaking

The vineyards were harvested over almost two weeks with early (6th April) selective hand picks in mid Wairau Valley vineyards on stony soils with lighter canopies to the 18th April from the more southerly Awatere Valley vineyard. The hand picked fruit was whole bunch pressed with the free run juice run directly to barrel for fermentation. The balance was fermented in stainless steel tanks at relatively cool temperatures using selected aromatic yeast. The final blend has just under 10% barrel fermented component from large format German oak fuder barrels and small French oak barriques.

Vintage Conditions

In Marlborough a dry 2015 winter created some concern about the growing season ahead but soil moisture levels were high enough to maintain exceptionally healthy vines. In early December, the average air temperature increased which resulted in a particularly successful flowering period. Rain events in January and February ensured that fruit set and berry development conditions were ideal. With increased temperatures from February onwards, it was the perfect soughtafter ripening environment that favours flavour development, while retaining acidity with the cooler nights.

Following harvest the grapes were pressed to tank for fermentation. A controlled ferment with hand selected yeast ensured aroma and fruit character were retained. The wine was blended soon after fermentation was completed, before it was bottled.

The growing season started dry promoting great fruit and rain in January provided ideal conditions for berry development. From February through to harvest, Marlborough turned on perfect ripening conditions with warm days and cool nights creating berries packed with Sauvignon Blanc flavour.

Winemaking

Blocks harvested at optimum ripeness, pressing commenced immediately as the fruit arrived at the vineyard. Each vineyard was kept separate to allow for true vineyard expression to show. Tanks were floated for clarity and juice lees were reincorporated into each vineyard parcel before fermentation. Held in stainless steel on light lees before blending in late May. A light protein fine with no palate fining. Bottling in early July.

Vintage conditions

The season started with cooler than average temperatures, as summer commenced the region experienced cool, overcast weather, influencing the all-important flowering period. These cool conditions creating variability in the amount and size of the berries. The resulting smaller berries and reduced yield were however compensated with concentrated flavours. By late December temperatures climbed and the rain stayed away. With record low rainfall the continued dry, and disease free conditions meant the flavour, acidity, texture and sugar levels all benefited from the increased hang time ensuring the grapes were delivered to the winery at optimum ripeness.

The juice was inoculated with a range of selected aromatic yeast strains. Fermentation took approximately three weeks in tank at 12 to 16°C.

As is often the case with the smaller berries, the flavours are more intense and concentrated. The warm dry conditions leading into harvest across much of New Zealand ensured the flavour, acidity and sugar levels of the grapes all benefited from the increased hang time. The fruit in each block was picked at optimum ripeness.

The 2015 season started drier than usual with typically good temperatures from December through to February. Around 16th to 18th March the edge of a tropical cyclone made its presence felt and about 50mm of rain fell in Hawke’s Bay. Immediately after the rain, some very cool southerly winds dried the vineyards out perfectly. The next three weeks saw almost no rain and ripening continued well. Cool dry weather followed right up until the end of harvest on the 24th April. Harvest began with Chardonnay around mid-March and the fruit benefited greatly from another two weeks on the vine.

Vineyard Region

Blended from cool-climate vineyards throughout Marlborough, Waipara and Nelson.

Winemaking

After pressing and settling for 36 hours the clear juice was fermented in separate vineyard batches mostly at cool temperatures. The ferments were all clean and steady with some great spice and exotic tropical aromas being expressed. We stopped the ferments when the crucial acid/sugar/alcohol balance was reached. The wine was blended and kept on light lees until bottling in May 2016.

Vintage Conditions

A cooler than usual start to the growing season soon gave way to typical hot, dry conditions with no rain. This resulted in small berry size with high concentration of flavour, which was all picked at optimal ripeness in excellent condition.
