Harvest commenced on March 23rd and continued until April 10th for the 2016 Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc. A small shift in where the fruit was sourced in 2016 has resulted in a wine with a greater aromatic range than previous years and a softer, rounder palate structure. All fruit was fermented in tank with selected yeast strains, maintaining aromatic purity and capturing the essence of Marlborough. The wine was allowed to build additional interest and texture through extended lees aging post fermentation. True to its house style, the2016 displays lovely citrus drive but is noticeable also for its stonefruit and white currant notes. The palate is quintessentially Marlborough - bright and fresh with lovely a clean acid backbone carrying the fruit flavours to a long, pure finish.

Nautilus Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (12 x 750mL), Malborough.

The fruit was machine harvested at night or in the cool of the morning, gently crushed and pressed then fermented with a variety of aromatic yeast strains in stainless steel tanks - the sole aim being to reflect and preserve the flavours and aromas grown in the vineyard. 30% of the juice fermentations were started with a non-saccharomyces yeast and 2% of the blend was barrel fermented. Marlborough is renowned as one of the world’s top regions for sauvignon blanc. The Ten Sisters vineyard is in the Southern Valleys subregion, known for its tropical fruit characteristics. The Southern Valleys are closer to the mountains, creating a cooler climate that leads to later ripening and more vibrant flavors. The soil of the Southern Valleys is primarily loess, or fine windblown soil derived from glacial deposits, and has more clay than other subregions. After being pressed to tank, then left to settle and clear, the juice was racked and inoculated with selected yeast strains known to enhance desirable varietal characteristics. The wine remained on yeast lees for two months, before racking to fine lees for another two months. (246612-1)

Church Road Chardonnay 2016 (6 x 750mL) Hawkes Bay NZ

Winemaking:

Skin contact is kept to an absolute minimum to avoid the harsh extraction of phenolics. The juice is only lightly settled without the aid of enzymes or other clarification tools. The resultant turbidity promotes complexity and texture. Fermentations are allowed to start wild to encourage positive complexity, before being inoculated with selected yeast strains to ensure a clean finish to fermentation. Barrel fermentation is employed in Hungarian and French oak barrels and all parcels are inoculated for malolactic fermentation. This secondary fermentation reduces acidity and adds a creamy richness to the palate. After fermentation, the component wines are aged on full yeast lees (sediment) with regular battonage (lees stirring). This promotes a process known as yeast autolysis, in which the yeast cells break open, adding texture and a nutty, mealy aroma to the wine. It also helps protect the wine from oxidation during the maturation process, promoting good fruit freshness. The total maturation period was 6 months, with 30% new oak and the remainder in second, third and fourth fill barrels.
