Windy Peak Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL), Heathcote, VIC.

Fruit is sourced from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz grown on the red cambrian soils of Northern Heathcote. Fruit is harvested at 14.0-15.0 Baume to achieve a balance of fruit ripeness and balanced acidity. Grapes are destemmed and crushed into both static and rotary fermenters. The resultant wine is then fermented for up to two weeks on skins prior to pressing and racking. A third of the blend is matured for 5 months in older casks and the remainder stays in tank for freshness and brightness.

McGuigan `Black Label` Merlot 2015 (6 x 750mL), SE AUS.

Merlot was originally used as a blending variety, often forming the major component. It tends to be lower in tannins, thus adding some softness to other more powerful reds. Recently it has become increasingly popular as a single varietal. Australian merlots come in many styles although all predominantly feature rich plum flavours. On its own, merlot produces a smooth rich wine and this is a prime example.

Evans & Tate `Redbroook` Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (6 x 750mL), WA.

Under a rich and bright West Australian sun, rows of vines create patchworks of colour across the landscape. The ground underfoot subtly rises and falls, as 35 year old vines whisper a story that begins with a single vineyard.A vineyard named Redbrook. The year was 1974 when Evans & Tate founders John Evans and John Tate saw promise in a piece of land on the northern bank of the Wilyabrup River. A site wisely selected for its well-drained gravel soils, Mediterranean climate and maritime location, they planted the land to vines the following year. John Tate's beloved dog was a red-brown coloured daschund called Redbrook and this, a great companion for many winemakers, provided the inspiration for the vineyard's name.Nestled in the heart of the Wilyabrup wine region, Redbrook is now surrounded by a collection of the region's equally iconic and historic vineyards. Home to some of the oldest vines in the Margaret River, the Redbrook vineyard remains the home of the Evans & Tate. The vineyard has a history of producing wines of excellence, wines of benchmark regional style and importantly, wines of distinctive originality. And this history has inspired the beginning of an enduring pursuit for the winery.Blending select parcels of fruit from the region's most outstanding vineyards, the Evans & Tate Redbrook range emulates the standard set by the original Redbrook vineyard. These are wines of distinction and passion; wines that live and breathe the history of their namesake.

An incredibly mild summer with above average rainfall ensured slow, even ripening of the fruit. To preserve delicate fruit flavours, the fruit was harvested in the cool of the night and delivered in small batches to the winery. The grapes were crushed, yeasted and pumped over in traditional style to avoid the extraction of bitter tannins. Select parcels received American oak maturation for 10 months to add complexity and structure prior to final blending and bottling.

Heredad de Baroja Gran Reserva 2002 (6 x 750mL), Spain.
Average rating 5 out of 5 stars
1 REVIEW

The 2002 vintage was the smallest in ten years as a result of winter drought and cool weather at flowering, and the best wines were produced from old vines able to draw on deep root systems to tap reserves of moisture. In addition, the summer was relatively cool, which added to the acid structure and lent a fresh vibrancy to the fruit. This gran reserva was carefully elaborated using the traditional method of carbon maceration, with entire grapes sealed in a stainless steel deposit where they undergo alcoholic fermentation. The process produces an excellent wine with an intense colour while preserving the grapes’ natural aromatic character. Then aged in American and French oak barrels for 36 months, and then kept in bottles for a minimum of 24 months or until it reaches its optimal maturation.
