De Bortoli `Windy Peak` Shiraz 2016 (6 x 750mL), Heathcote, VIC.

Fruit is sourced from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz grown on the red cambrian soils of Northern Heathcote. Fruit is harvested at 14.0-15.0 Baume to achieve a balance of fruit ripeness and balanced acidity. Grapes are destemmed and crushed into both static and rotary fermenters. The resultant wine is then fermented for up to two weeks on skins prior to pressing and racking. A third of the blend is matured for 5 months in older casks and the remainder stays in tank for freshness and brightness.

Oliver's Taranga Shiraz 2015 (6 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.

Hearty stuff. This is like getting a big cuddle from your big and burly Uncle Bob.Upon opening it was like a caged lion - in your face. The Tony Abbott shirt fronting type (not that big Tone ever follows through with his words). Politics and wine reviews don't mix. Moving on...Bold dark fruit plus dark chocolate on the 70% cocoa side. Blackberries and mulberries walk at ease with star anise chipping away before ribs of tannin roll in. The generosity is what makes this wine so appealing and inviting.Over two days of tasting it continued to soften. Some more time in bottle will see it shine furthermore. Interestingly, cedar and caramel were prominent on the first day but dissolved to be almost invisible on the second. This is cold night, big food and big cuddle sort of stuff. Jimmy Shiraz 2017 (12 x 750mL) VIC. Screwcap Closure.

Established in 1970, Montara is captivating with its panorama of plains, mountains, vines, and old-world charm of the Ararat gold rush days. Situated 200 kilometres west of Melbourne in the Grampians region, it is a feast for the eyes and the spirit. The elevation and site exposure of Montara’s vineyards, between 312 and 360 metres above sea level, is particularly important in avoiding frost and influencing growth of the vines. Our vines grow in well-drained, rich red loam soil over a gravel/shale base. The total area under vine is 20 hectares, and plantings include shiraz, pinot noir, and riesling (all of which are 40+ year old vines), as well as chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot.

House of Plantagenet `Lancaster` Shiraz 2015 (12 x 750mL), Mount Barker, WA

Overall the Great Southern saw an excellent growing season and 2014 harvest. The season was characterised initially by unseasonally strong winds leading to some slight inflorescence damage. These conditions subsided in the two weeks prior to flowering however and much of the Great Southern saw good fruit set. Moderate rainfall during the early growing season was welcome on the whole but excess moisture did provide a small amount of disease pressure. Later in the season however, the region saw particularly dry conditions with very little rainfall in the two months leading in to harvest and presenting some challenges in particular for dry grown vineyards. A typical strong diurnal effect was observed, with cold nights and warm days leading to a long, uniform slow ripening period.

VINIFICATION NOTESThe grapes are crushed and de-stemmed into fermenters. Yeast is added immediately once in fermenter and the ferments are pumped over twice daily to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction. Cooling is used to ensure ferment temperatures remain in the 22-25 degree Celsius range which will allow the fruit to display maximum fruit expression. Pressing then occurs approximately seven days after crushing and the wine is then put into French oak for maturation for up to 12 months
