The Village Botanist Tempranillo 2013 (6 x 750mL) Currency Creek SA

Average rating 4 out of 5 stars
1 REVIEW
Lot No: 0021-2463061

Organically grown in Currency Creek, South Australia this wine shows fruit characters of ripe berry, liquorice, plum and drying tobacco leaf. The palate is full with a firm tannin structure leading into flavours of cherry and hints of cedar wood. Picked during March 2013 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around seven days, following pressing the wine was aged in a mixture of French and American oak barrels to develop complexity. The Village Botanist range of wines is a celebration of the pull to make artisan wine. Crafted by Vanessa Altmann former Head Winemaker at Temple Bruer Wines and twice national Young Gun of Wine finalist. The progressive winemaker has made wine for sixteen years throughout the regions of the Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Langhorne Creek. With a focus on sustainable and organic winemaking, Vanessa began fermenting small batch wines under the label Switch Wine during 2010. The Village Botanist range is an extension of this winemaking philosophy and style.During vintage you’ll find us with buckets at the ready, thrown towards friends and enjoying long picnic lunches amongst the vines. We seek organically grown parcels of fruit and working closely with growers and friends is all part of how we like to make wine. We live by the ethos that outstanding wines come not only from great vineyards, but from people who love what they do.These are small batch wines, sometimes made in quantities as limited as 100 cases. Our aim is to offer these wines in a different way direct from the winemaker to the wine drinker, it’s that easy. (252628-2)

Winemaker:

Vanessa Altmann from Switch Organic Wine - Top 12 finalist in Young Gun of Wine 2017Grown in Langhorne Creek, South Australia this wine shows bright fruit characters of cherry and raspberry, with soft gentle tannins. The wine has a delicious texture that finishes with a hint of earth typical of the region, and while Merlot has often been used for blending this wine reminds me of some of the best Pinot’s I’ve tasted, an elegant example of Merlot as a varietal. Picked during March 2017 the bunches were de-stemmed and crushed to allow fermentation on skins for around seven days, following pressing the wine was steeped in a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon skins for around four days to build complexity and palate weight, while still remaining true to Merlot style. Dolcetto, in Italian, means 'little sweet one' and gives this wine its fabulous ruby red color and some black cherry and cinnamon characters. Merlot, a traditional blending grape, has loads of bright red fruit flavors. Together, their structure keeps things interesting and the fruit-forward, juicy flavors soft. But wait there's more - this luscious tongue-lashing has some pretty serious savory notes, which means pairing Frisk Prickly Rosso with cheeses, charcuterie or tucking into a bowl of your favorite pasta will bring you to a very happy place (250225-1)

Lot No: 0002-2462989

Benwarin is a local aboriginal word meaning "long hill". Benwarin wines are made entirely with grapes grown in our low- yielding vineyard at Mistletoe Lane, Pokolbin. The 2006 Shiraz was bottled after 15 months maturation in selected French and American oak barrels. It is a medium bodied Shiraz with sweet mild palate fruit balanced well by savoury oak and fine tannins. The Hunter Valley is the historical home of the Australian wine industry with the first vines being planted in the 1820’s. Wine has always been a significant industry in the valley, never more so than at the present time. Being only 2 hours from Sydney, the Hunter has become Australia’s best known wine tourism destination. The Hunter is the furthest north of the major wine districts in Australia, placing it at the warm end of the spectrum for quality wine. Despite this many of the best wines in Australia are produced there. The Pokolbin sub-district is close enough to the coast to be cooled by sea breezes and coastal cloud cover in the summer. Vineyards are typically low-yielding, producing around 5 tonnes per hectare. Many wine writers regard Hunter semillon as Australia’s most distinctive and possibly best wine. Hunter shiraz is also very well regarded – the classic Hunter style is medium-bodied, complex, and well balanced, making it an excellent food wine. Chardonnay was first grown in Australia in the Hunter in the 1960’s and some of best chardonnays in Australia are produced there. Another variety well suited to the Hunter is verdelho, which has been grown in the Hunter since the 1830’s. Verdelho is a Portuguese variety best known as the variety Madeira is made from. In the Hunter it makes a delicious full bodied white table wine well suited to Asian food. (252346-11)
