Overview

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc from our Pemberton vineyards, the 2006 Smithbrook Sauvignon Blanc is a delicate wine with a nice balance of richness and structured intensity. Immediately after opening the nose shows fresh passion fruit and lime zest, with a touch of rose petal and perfumed dried herbs. The palate is very elegant with an abundance of tangy citrus fruits balanced by some nice mid-palate passion fruit sweetness and rolling intensity.

“A clean, crisp and correct, but very light-bodied wine, with just a few nuances of gooseberry, apple and citrus.”

- James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2008

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2006 vintage in Pemberton was the most challenging we have experienced at Smithbrook. A cool growing season delayed vintage by two to three weeks, with the mainly cool weather continuing into the vintage period. Persistent drizzle and the occasional rain shower created conditions more akin to a standard Bordeaux vintage, though whilst the conditions proved too much for later ripening red varieties, our Sauvignon Blanc vines handled the conditions remarkably well.

It is always immensely satisfying to see prized blocks in the vineyard consistently produce high quality fruit, regardless of the vintage conditions. Thankfully we have many such blocks planted to Sauvignon Blanc in the Smithbrook vineyard, all located on the free draining Karri or Marri Gum soils. With some extra leaf plucking and selective fruit removal by our winemaking and vineyard team we were able to harvest some high quality parcels of fruit for the Smithbrook label.

Each of the parcels of fruit/juice were fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with a section of our Hilltop block fermented and aged for 3 months in older French oak barriques (representing nearly 15% of the final blend).

Despite the difficult conditions of the vintage, the 2006 Smithbrook Sauvignon Blanc still manages to display all of the typical characters that make Pemberton Sauvignon Blanc so attractive, and shows why Pemberton has become recognized as WA’s best for this variety.
