Overview

We had a sensational growing season for the 2013 vintage in Marlborough. It was just one beautifully clear day after the other, warm and sunny with little rainfall. However, we still experienced cool nights during the ripening period which helped to develop intense flavours in the grapes. These conditions ensured healthy, clean vine canopies and fruit packed with flavour and intensity across all varieties. With the warm weather, harvest started slightly early this year. The vintage was short and very intense, with several of our varieties ripening around the same time giving us a shorter than usual window for harvesting. We are thrilled with the overall quality of our 2013 vintage.

Expert Reviews

Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2013 Yealands Estate Pinot Noir is very fruity with a black cherry, mulberry and warm cranberry nose dotted with touches of roses. Medium-bodied and quite elegant in the mouth, it has a low to medium level of velvety tannins and lively acid to hold through the finish with a good length of perfumed flavors. Rating 89 - Drink by 2017, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, erobertparker.com (DEC/2014).

Plum and cherry jam, spice and cream. Pretty thin, tastes like raspberry jelly, some light grainy tannin and a modest finish. Simple but pretty good. Rating 87 - Drink by 2018, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (OCT/2014).

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Yealands Estate is based in the Awatere Valley to the south east of Marlborough's Wairau Plains. Their vineyard stretches from the foothills of the Seaward Kaikoura ranges to the bluffs overlooking Cook Strait on the east coast of Marlborough.

Back when Marlborough's wine industry started to gather momentum in the Awatere everyone thought the steep contours of these foothills were too challenging for viticulture. Everyone that is except Peter Yealand. He recognised that with careful development and clever thinking this terroir would produce great wine. In 2002 he began consolidating his vineyards here, extending his existing interests on the Wairau Plains with the development of some 950 hectares of rolling Awatere country which he terraced into vineyard blocks to create New Zealand's single largest privately-owned vineyard.
