Clear, sunny days and cool nights produced the perfect ripening conditions leading up to a successful 2014 harvest. Apart from a limited period of unseasonal rain, the region remained very dry right throughout the summer months and into early autumn. It was a sensational harvest for all of our Pinot Gris parcels in the Awatere Valley. All parcels were harvested early in prime condition and a touch riper than previous vintages, bursting with concentrated notes of ripe pear.

Expert Reviews

Lime and slight spice, honeydew and perfume. Light and a bit herbal on the palate with lemony acidity – certainly a fresher style – fine powdery texture. Crunchy finish with a lick of sweetness. Has a bit of energy and decent length. Rating 89 - Drink by 2018, Gary Walsh, (OCT/2014).

The 2014 Yealands Estate Pinot Gris offers up aromas of fresh apples and pears with hints of melon, white pepper and fennel seed. There is just a touch of sweetness to the medium bodied palate that is followed by a nice freshness on the finish with good length. Rating 88 - Drink by 2016, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, (DEC/2014).

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Yealands Estate is based in the Awatere Valley to the south east of Marlborough's Wairau Plains. Their vineyard stretches from the foothills of the Seaward Kaikoura ranges to the bluffs overlooking Cook Strait on the east coast of Marlborough.

Back when Marlborough's wine industry started to gather momentum in the Awatere everyone thought the steep contours of these foothills were too challenging for viticulture. Everyone that is except Peter Yealand. He recognised that with careful development and clever thinking this terroir would produce great wine. In 2002 he began consolidating his vineyards here, extending his existing interests on the Wairau Plains with the development of some 950 hectares of rolling Awatere country which he terraced into vineyard blocks to create New Zealand's single largest privately-owned vineyard.
