Expert Reviews

"I know it’s a big call but I don’t believe there’s been a better quaffing red in the country over the past five or six years than the Yalumba “Y Series” Shiraz Viognier. At a time when it seems to be getting harder to find excellent wines under $15, this is a superstar. With the 2010 shiraz viognier, winemaker Any La Nauze brings out silky smooth texture and neatly balanced oak and tannins. It’s easy to drink, yet has concentration, power and depth of flavour. The 2010 shiraz is also warmly recommended.

Peter Forrestal, Money Magazine, Wine Spotlight, March 2012

"Garnet-purple in color, the 2010 The Y Series Shiraz Viognier is a little reduced to begin, giving way to aromas of ripe plums, black cherries and blackberries mingled with black pepper and dried Provence herbs. Medium bodied with a good amount of peppered berry flavors in the mouth, it has some chewy tannins, crisp acidity and a medium to long finish. Drink it now through 2014."

Rating 86 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, eRobertParker.com #199 (USA), February 2012

"There are very few wines with a street price under $10 for which I can hand-on-heart recommend any vintage in the past five years. YSV is a serious blend that captures the spicy allure of peppery shiraz in all of its juicy stewed rhubarb and satsuma plum glory. Viognier adds the faintest lift of violet petals, but the real surprise comes on the finish; a frame of finely structured, textural tannins, excellent depth of black fruits and lingering persistence."

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep crimson purple in colour.

Aroma

The 2010 Y Series Shiraz Viognier has aromas that are both wild and exotic. Blueberries, violets and cherry ripe notes from the Shiraz are elevated by the subtle influence of Viognier, which brings an alluring Turkish delight character.

Palate

The well rounded palate is medium to full bodied and shows Turkish delight and cherry ripe flavours that are in harmony with the silky tannins.

Wine Background

The Shiraz Vioginier depicts the horse, a symbol of our past when they were the transport and tractor of Yalumba. Nowadays, we enjoy a day at the races watching magnificent thoroughbreds cross the finish line carrying our colours and money! A medium weight, generous mouthful of blueberries and Turkish delight.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
