Expert Reviews

"Yalumba pioneered planting of viognier in SA. The front label of the Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2012 depicts vine cuttings for a new vineyard which were developed in Yalumba’s own nursery.

Winemaker Andrew La Nauze used indigenous yeast in the fermentation, then left the wine on yeast lees for a few months to increase complexity, creaminess and richness on the palate. This viognier reflects Yalumba’s experience with the variety. It evokes hints of honeysuckle and lychee. It is suitable for vegans and vegetarians."

Ross Noble, The Courier, 17 October 2012

89 points - "When Yalumba first started making big noises about viognier – over a decade ago – the wines they often produced were big, spicy, hedonistic, alcoholic numbers. This wine is reminiscent of those releases – with refinement. Indeed I’d argue this wine suggests how far Yalumba – and Australia – has come with viognier. It’s just a good wine, no trumpets – but with a few signature flourishes. Ginger, stonefruits, fleshy white nuts, warm stewed apples. It’s big-ish but not burningly so. It’s not just another white white, it’s viognier and proudly so. A wine like this has a real place in the Australian white wine drinking landscape. I probably should rate it higher."

"One of two Viognier tasted on the day, and this demonstrated the greater aromatic range - again without the shrillness that can be seen in some Viognier.

Full on apricot, hints of candy-like stonefruit and ginger present too. Fuller mouth-feel, unctuous, fresh - good acid, phenolics and more ginger spice notes that cling to the mouth. Good length and staying power. Another that punches above its weight in the Y Series range."

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale straw in colour.

The 2012 Y Series Viognier has aromas of honeysuckle, candied ginger and glacé pineapple that typify this exotic variety.

The palate is rich in texture and body thanks to wild yeast fermentation and ageing on lees, yet retains a refreshing quality that make it a pleasure to drink. Flavours to be found on the palate include fresh pineapple and lychee.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
