Expert Reviews

Fruit driven, refreshing and subtle, with a dry, lingering finish, this is a Chardonnay of white nectarine, crunchy grapefruit, zesty lemon and faint pineapple nuances. The perfect thing to keep in the fridge for unexpected guests.Rating 89 -Tyson Stelzer, Wine 100 (March/April 2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale straw in colour.

The aromas are signified by nectarine and grapefruit with hints of nougat and cinnamon.

This is a medium bodied wine, built around fresh fruit, with lees texture. The palate has layers of grapefruit and nougat flavours. This is a finely textured wine that finishes with crisp acid that leaves a lasting impression of grapefruit sorbet.

Food Matching

Enjoy with a burger filled with grilled haloumi, grilled eggplant, fresh rocket and hummus.

Winemaking Note

Our unwooded Chardonnay style is captured by picking the grapes when the flavours are fresh and lively. For 2010 we have again picked the grapes early in the ripeness spectrum to create a crisp and food-friendly wine. Cool processing and fermentation were used to retain the freshness of the grapes, and the wine was allowed some time on its yeast lees after blending to build some richness of flavour. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Wine Background

This Unwooded Chardonnay depicts the Cape Barren Goose, a symbol of an endangered species. Over the years, many birds and animals have sought and found refuge in Yalumba’s sanctuary, land dedicated to native wildlife rehabilitation.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
